Angelo State University creates 鈥渁 place to enhance your education while gaining a large extended family of peers and faculty.鈥� From 鈥渇inancial aid to instruction and tutoring programs, [the school] is focused on helping its students matriculate and succeed in their future endeavors.鈥� One student adds, 鈥淲e have a great administration staff here with open doors鈥�for the students who may have questions or concerns or just want to chat.鈥� ASU is committed to making 鈥渃ollege affordable to everyone,鈥� as evidenced by the fact that nearly 85 percent of students receive some form of aid that does not need to be repaid after graduation. Classes at ASU are taught by instructors who are 鈥渁ttentive to students鈥� needs and experiences in and outside of the classroom鈥� and 鈥渉elp prepare us for our careers upon graduation.鈥� Students also appreciate the smaller class sizes, noting that 鈥渋t really helps to have the one-on-one help and communication with a professor to learn the specific subject.鈥� Professors don鈥檛 just teach; they 鈥渆ncourage students to achieve greatness and successfully complete their schooling to the best of their abilities.鈥� They also support their students by 鈥渆xplaining concepts outside of class time, offering advice of which courses to take, or even offering career advice.鈥� The faculty genuinely care about students鈥� success; they 鈥渁ll have your best interest and will work with you, yet still hold you accountable.鈥�

At ASU, 鈥渢here are so many opportunities to meet people and make long-lasting friendships and connections.鈥� The students are 鈥渇riendly and accommodating鈥� and they鈥檝e 鈥渁ll got the kind Texan heart, although not all of them are native Texans.鈥� Indeed, the population is 鈥渁n amazingly diverse mixture of traditional and non-traditional students鈥� from 鈥渟o many different countries, states and towns.鈥� Many students are first-generation, and many 鈥渁re from around the San Angelo area, so the small-town feel is very much present.鈥� The university is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), and 鈥渢here is a lot of Hispanic culture in San Angelo.鈥� One student notes, 鈥淓veryone has a different story on why they are earning a degree.鈥� The Ram Fam, as the community is known, is 鈥渄edicated to a culture of excellence in not only education but in every aspect, from sports to community service.鈥� ASU also has 鈥渁 tremendous reputation of making students feel welcome and helping them fit into their role as a student and cherished member of this university.鈥�

鈥淟ife at ASU is pretty laid back,鈥� and the 鈥渃ourse schedule is flexible enough with breaks, which gives [us] time enough to eat, work, chit-chat, study or do other things.鈥� There are 鈥渁ctivities going on at all times,鈥� including events like haunted houses, sports games, Ram Jam, club meetings, art events, and volunteer work. Student organizations 鈥渁re fully committed to making the campus atmosphere fun and exciting,鈥� with a variety of options available: departmental organizations for students within their major, religious and secular organizations, and 鈥渇raternities and sororities that are about community engagement.鈥� Intramural sports are very popular here, and many students 鈥渉ave spent countless hours on the fields at ASU.鈥� This is a Division II school, and the 鈥渁thletics teams here are outstanding and the games are a blast to attend.鈥� You don鈥檛 need to be an athlete to 鈥渟pend a lot of time in the CHP鈥� (Center for Human Performance), which has a 鈥渘ew and very nice gym鈥� complete with a basketball court, a large weight room, a rock-climbing wall, racquetball rooms, and other options for recreation and exercise. For those who enjoy nature, the university offers a lake facility where students can rent kayaks and bikes and enjoy a scenic picnic area.
