It鈥檚 easy for Appalachian State University to attract undergraduates. Not only is the school 鈥渆xceedingly affordable,鈥� but it offers 鈥済orgeous scenery鈥� and 鈥渁 strong sense of community that makes all its students feel like they have found their place.鈥� Undergrads also appreciate the resources provided to facilitate everyone鈥檚 experience, such as the school鈥檚 textbook rental program, which 鈥渟aves most students hundreds of dollars per semester鈥� and tries to ensure that students 鈥渄o not have to stress about purchasing too many books.鈥� Additionally, App State provides 鈥済reat continuing education scholarships.鈥� The university touts a 鈥渢errific Honors College鈥� as well as 鈥渁 wide range of majors.鈥� Plus, all undergrads here benefit from 鈥渃lass sizes [that] are small enough to allow a more personal learning experience while remaining large enough to allow all students to get the classes they need.鈥� Many applaud the fact that their professors are 鈥渁ll highly educated experts in their respective fields and do not rely on TAs to teach their courses.鈥� And speaking of the faculty, students find that most of them 鈥済enuinely seem to love teaching.鈥� They are also 鈥渆xceedingly knowledgeable鈥� and provide students with 鈥済reat resources that really help [them] to understand and apply material.鈥� All in all, 鈥淎pp [has] the greatest professional staff that I have ever encountered. From advisors, professors, or even the people working in the kitchen, everyone legitimately wants to see you succeed.鈥�

App State seems to attract 鈥渓aid-back and casual鈥� individuals who typically give off a 鈥渞elaxed, accepting vibe鈥� peppered with a 鈥渢inge...[of ] hippie.鈥� A large percentage of students 鈥渁re extremely passionate about sustainability...and their impact on the environment鈥� as well. Moreover, undergrads see their peers as 鈥渙pen-minded鈥� people who 鈥渁re very accepting of ideas and identities that do not fit the status quo,鈥� though some students do report their peers to lean 鈥渕ore on the liberal side鈥� of the political spectrum. Perhaps more critically, students underscore the fact that their classmates are 鈥渒ind and genuine.鈥� Indeed, 鈥渋f you need help, almost anyone you find walking down the hallway would go out of their way to lend a helping hand.鈥� While some say it can feel like 鈥渕ost of the students are white鈥� and a 鈥渧ast majority of people...com[e] from North Carolina and other southern states,鈥� others counter that you can still meet 鈥渟tudents from all around the country and world.鈥� Overall, 鈥淎pp State truly has such a welcoming and accepting student body that it would be hard to come across someone that you absolutely just didn鈥檛 like or didn鈥檛 enjoy talking to.鈥�

Simply put, you鈥檇 have to work really hard to be bored at App State. For starters, 鈥渁ttending football games and tailgating鈥� is always a big draw. 鈥淭here are [also] many, many clubs you can join and participate in鈥� like the App State Running club, the Finance Student Association, and theater and music group. Students also note that both 鈥淕reek life and religious life [are] common, but not overbearing.鈥� App State also has a fair number of students who gravitate toward the outdoors. In the warmer months, you鈥檒l find undergrads 鈥渓ounging in hammocks or playing [various] outdoor sports.鈥� Of course, 鈥渙nce the snow falls, kids have snowball fights, or sled down the hills, taking advantage of the winter fun.鈥� And for the adventurous type, you can certainly find plenty here. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the university offers robust Outdoor Programs, organizing exciting trips such as 鈥渃anoeing [and] stand-up paddle boarding鈥� and 鈥渟kiing and snowboarding in the winter.鈥� There are also 鈥渕any hiking trails a short drive from campus.鈥� Given the school鈥檚 proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, it makes sense that 鈥渞ock climbing is very popular here and you can often hear rock climbers hooting and hollering as you hike a trail.鈥�
