Case Western Reserve University is a nationally recognized research university offering a 鈥渉ands-on interface between curriculum and real-world situations.鈥� It is also a 鈥渧ery interdisciplinary school that encourages multiple majors/minors鈥� and, to that end, offers 鈥渞esearch opportunities in very different fields, various opportunities for publications and conference presentations, [and] experiential evidence-based learning strategies.鈥� CWRU has particularly strong engineering and medical programs, and 鈥渢he academics and education provided by CWRU are excellent and intensive, which draws attention from employers.鈥� Students also note that 鈥渢he Undergraduate Research Office is extremely helpful in finding research offices, and most hospitals are open to students getting involved in volunteering and research.鈥� Classes tap into a variety of teaching methods, including 鈥渞ecitation sections, where students ask questions and work through practice problems in small group settings...and are a way of connecting with peers,鈥� and 鈥渞everse lectures where you watch lectures on your study time and then go to the lecture time for questions.鈥� One student gives an example from their intro engineering course鈥檚 labs, which 鈥渋nvolve working in groups of 4 to design prototypes for problems involving different types of engineering, such [as] designing a set of wheel-legs...for a robotic car to help it traverse obstacles.鈥� The professors at CWRU are 鈥渆xtremely enthusiastic about the material they are teaching, which goes a long way to making the class engaging.鈥� As one student notes, 鈥渢he amount of professors at CWRU that are incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and excited to teach is far greater than the number that are not.鈥� In addition, 鈥淔or introductory classes, additional resources like teaching assistants, supplemental instructors, and tutors are easily accessible and helpful.鈥� Another student says, 鈥淥verall, this school and the professors have fostered my passions and are what led me to end up pursuing medicine as a career.鈥�

Students at CWRU are described as the sort of overachiever who is 鈥減robably minoring in like 2鈥�3 different things if not double majoring already because just having your major isn鈥檛 enough.鈥� Luckily, this is a 鈥渧ery supportive environment of peers pushing each other to be their best,鈥� and that 鈥渋s what makes the experience enjoyable.鈥� Additionally, the size of the school makes it so 鈥渢he student body as a whole is very connected within themselves and it鈥檚 impossible to go a day without seeing someone you know on campus.鈥� Attendees also speak toward the school鈥檚 diversity, in that 鈥測ou will meet people of lots of different backgrounds and countries,鈥� all of whom bring 鈥渢he best of their cultures and [aren鈥檛] afraid to express themselves.鈥� This active 鈥渃ommunity really motivates others to work hard for their professional goals,鈥� and provides not only 鈥渁 lot of ways to relax and have fun, but plenty of people to study with as well.鈥�

CWRU students 鈥渇ind a lot of meaning outside of the classroom,鈥� and 鈥渆veryone is in at least one club but often more, [and] many people are working or are in a research lab.鈥� As some students note, since 鈥渆veryone is so intensely busy, most socializing happens either during extracurriculars or at weekend parties.鈥� In addition, the student board provides activities such as 鈥渢rips to New York on breaks, food tours around the city, and many fun giveaways.鈥� Many students 鈥渁re also part of varsity sports or intramural sports. Our school鈥檚 ultimate Frisbee team is quite competitive.鈥� As for getting off campus, the school is located in Cleveland鈥檚 booming Arts District, and students say that 鈥済oing to the CMA [Cleveland Museum of Art], MOCA [Museum of Contemporary Art], the Botanical Garden, and History Museum are huge.鈥� They also like 鈥渢o eat out at the various restaurants throughout Cleveland and go out to areas such as Little Italy, Ohio City, and the Flats.鈥� Between the city and the 鈥渕yriad of clubs and organizations on campus,鈥� students express that 鈥渢here is truly a place that everybody belongs.鈥�

The academic atmosphere at CWRU is 鈥渇ull of opportunities for research or internship experience.鈥� Opportunities for co-ops, lab experience, shadowing, and volunteering with some of the world鈥檚 top organizations help to overlay classroom theory with hands-on applications, and Case Western Reserve鈥檚 science and tech programs act as a natural feeder to the booming healthcare and biotechnology industries in Cleveland and across the country. 鈥淎 student need only simply look, or ask career services,鈥� says one. In addition to being academics, professors include 鈥減rofessionals in the work force who bring those experiences to the classroom for a much more enhanced education,鈥� and can become the foundation of a contact network for jobs after graduation. Many engineering students at Case Western Reserve also take part in a co-op, which is a full-time, two-semester-long, paid work experience that gives students a head start with potential employers. Students in the College of Arts & Sciences can take part in a similar (but shorter) experience called a practicum. The median starting salary for graduates who visited PayScale.com was $68,100, and 51 percent of these same graduates reported feeling that their job had a meaningful impact on the world.
