The City College of New York鈥攖he founding institution of the City University of New York (CUNY)鈥攑rovides its students with 鈥渟trong STEM programs, diverse academic paths, and鈥�access to research labs and professors.鈥� The college 鈥渕akes students aware of the resources available to them,鈥� including 鈥渉elp at The Hub (for example, with class selection and major requirements) and tech loans.鈥� Students also value City College鈥檚 connections with organizations and 鈥渢he opportunity to network with professionals鈥� through career development events, which open the door for 鈥渕entorships, volunteer work, or internships, so that students can gain experience and develop their skills.鈥� There are 鈥渕any advisors that truly want to see students doing well,鈥� and this enthusiasm for education is spread across the board, as professors 鈥渢ruly make material accessible.鈥� The members of the faculty have 鈥渁n extensive background or are currently practicing, [which] helps a lot with creating a realistic and driven academic experience.鈥� Professors are 鈥渆ngaging and effective,鈥� and students 鈥渓ike the balance between interactive classes and strong, clear lectures.鈥� Some professors also 鈥渋ncorporate case studies, peer teaching, and in-class problem-solving activities that make the material feel more practical and engaging.鈥� No matter where students were before City College or where they are looking to go, 鈥減rofessors meet students鈥�where they are and鈥�encourage them to be the best they can be.鈥�

City College is a microcosm of its location, with a student body that is 鈥渃onstantly in motion鈥� and 鈥渧ery much representative of New York City.鈥� To wit, students 鈥渁re proud鈥� of their backgrounds and appreciate that there are 鈥渕any different clubs to find and connect with people [of the] same heritage.鈥� This rich tapestry of people is 鈥渁 culturally diverse group of students who think differently but work well collaboratively.鈥� There is a 鈥渉eavy emphasis on lending a helping hand and giving people the push they need to get to the destination they need to make.鈥� As one student explains, 鈥淲e share ideas, help when someone doesn鈥檛 understand something, and motivate each other to keep going. It feels like a community where everyone is trying to grow and move forward.鈥� The student body 鈥渋ncludes everyone from young adults just beginning their academic journey to older students returning to school after time away, [and] each person brings a unique blend of life experience, ambition, and insight that feels both distinct and deeply connected.鈥�

Life at City College 鈥渋s as dynamic as the city it sits in,鈥� and on a typical day, 鈥測ou鈥檒l see students hanging out on the quad between lectures, grabbing empanadas from food trucks, or catching their breath in the [North Academic Center] rotunda,鈥� while some will 鈥渟tudy together in the library, others hold club meetings, rehearse performances, or unwind in the student lounges.鈥� The school鈥檚 uptown campus location 鈥渋s great鈥�[an] ideal combination of green space, tranquility, with easy access to all Harlem has to offer.鈥� Students say 鈥渆verything is pretty accessible鈥�nothing is too far, and you don鈥檛 have to wander down streets to get anywhere.鈥� Many students like to 鈥渆xplore places around campus and try new restaurants together.鈥� This Division III school has more than 100 student clubs, and they are known for 鈥渙ffering multiple events during club hours where you can get free food, meet other students and learn.鈥� In addition, there are 鈥渢ons of student showcases all the time.鈥� With its active clubs and frequent events, 鈥渇or students who do desire a larger community on campus, there are plenty of opportunities if they seek them out.鈥�

City College graduates who visited PayScale.com reported a median starting salary of $51,400, and 55 percent of graduates feel their jobs have a lot of meaning in their lives. Students feel that City College 鈥渢horoughly prepares its students for their future careers, with emphasis placed on the effects of the current economic climate,鈥� and that there are veritable 鈥渢ons of internship/research opportunities,鈥� which students receive frequent email updates about. City College's Career and Professional Development Institute offers a number of services to students and alumni including individual career counseling, internship and job opportunities, resume writing, career fairs, and workshops aimed at developing the professional identity of students and alumni.
