At Brooklyn College, a key part of the City University of New York system, its more than 10,000 undergraduate 鈥渟tudents receive a quality education for a fraction of the price,鈥� especially for in-state residents. Autonomy is woven throughout the curricula and activities; one class required students 鈥渢o input topics we would like to see on the syllabus, creating a more engaged environment,鈥� and 鈥渢here are so many different options of choosing your own schedule.鈥� Students can also take part in special programs such as First College Year, which is designed to help students transition to the social and academic aspects of higher education the summer before their first year, or can avail themselves of what one respondent considers 鈥渢he greatest strength of my school...[the] tons of resources and help throughout the semester鈥� provided by the Magner Career Center. The administration also makes sure that students 鈥渃an find answers to possibly any and all questions you may have,鈥� and provides 鈥渞esources I can鈥檛 find anywhere else,鈥� such as 鈥渁dvisement, trainings/workshops, [and] work readiness workshops.鈥� Classes are varied and may include fieldwork or interactive labs, which creates 鈥渁n active learning environment and further learning about what is taught in lectures.鈥� An increase in online courses has been said to provide 鈥渁n innovative way [of ] learning without walls.鈥� These learning environments succeed in 鈥渆ncouraging students to speak freely and challenge ideas in a respectful way.鈥� In addition, 鈥減rofessors...push you in a good way鈥� and are 鈥渧ery kind and understanding as well as extremely knowledgeable in their subjects鈥� and 鈥渒eep in touch regularly.鈥�

Students here 鈥渃ome from all different countries, cultures and religions,鈥� and 鈥渆veryone has a place to fit in...no matter what boxes you as a student may or may not tick off.鈥� This diversity helps create an environment where students are constantly 鈥渓earning something new from everyone鈥檚 own perspectives and shared experiences鈥� and are 鈥渨elcoming, kind, and always willing to get together to study.鈥� Brooklyn College is primarily a commuter school, and everyone 鈥渉as a common goal and is serious about their future.鈥� Students 鈥渃onstantly want the best for each other while also pushing each other to discover their potentials,鈥� and 鈥渢here鈥檚 an effort to make everyone seen.鈥� The strong sense of community means 鈥減eople aren鈥檛 shy to help each other out, share views, and create safe spaces for everyone to thrive,鈥� and 鈥測ou will be able to find friends and peers from cultures all over the world.鈥� There 鈥渁re very close-knit relationships among the student body, whether it鈥檚 between students or with professors as well.鈥� Ultimately 鈥渆verybody gets very comfortable with one another and ends up getting...together at the food plaza right behind the library.鈥� One student confirms: 鈥淚 never feel out of place when I am in school and whenever I need help, someone is always willing to assist me.鈥�

The Brooklyn 鈥渃ampus is beautiful [with] lots of space,鈥� and since it is located in a mass transit hub, there are 鈥渕any ways of traveling easily鈥� around New York City. One student says, 鈥淚 took a class called Arts in NYC and we took many trips outside the classroom to the Metropolitan Opera, various museums, other plays/theater events.鈥� Though no dorms are available through the school itself, residences are available through an associated nonprofit organization. The campus 鈥渃loses late, [so] there鈥檚 lots of access to buildings and rooms on site鈥� for those that need a place (like the library) to study or meet, and there are also 鈥渕any tables and benches around the campus so we have more than enough space [to] hang around.鈥� Activities give a further reason to linger, with plenty of 鈥渧ery diverse and fun鈥� clubs, ranging from badminton to ASL. The student government 鈥淸holds] different events that help students communicate and connect with others,鈥� and the especially popular movie nights are 鈥渦sually well-known movies so more students can participate and converse with other students or staff.鈥�

Students say that Brooklyn College 鈥渋s an outstanding school with a very good reputation of successful alumni,鈥� and that 鈥渢here are a lot of volunteering programs and internships available.鈥� There is a strong dedication to the idea that 鈥淏rooklyn College is a school that attempts to provide an effective education for people in need of career advancement.鈥� The Magner Career Center partners with employers, faculty and staff, alumni, and students to provide career programs, services, and resources, and there is a commitment to 鈥減roviding immigrant, first-generation and all students with alumni connections鈥� 鈥攁 wide-ranging network of professional support and connections. Indeed, the alumni network is the backbone of the Center鈥檚 efforts, serving as guest speakers, mentors, and even employers of Brooklyn College graduates. Alumni who visited PayScale.com reported a median starting salary of $61,100, and 50 percent of graduates feel their jobs contribute a good deal of meaning to their lives.
