Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is a public liberal arts institution 鈥渇ocused on educating its students to be well-rounded intellectual citizens.鈥� With 150 undergraduate majors and minors offered, there are a 鈥渨ide variety of classes and programs鈥� available, ensuring that 鈥渢here鈥檚 something here for almost everyone.鈥� Historic, 鈥渂eautiful鈥� downtown Charleston doubles as 鈥渁 unique experience to enjoy and learn from the outdoors while still in an academic setting鈥� and comes with 鈥渓ots of fieldwork.鈥� That is matched by the 鈥渋ncredible experience and education鈥� professors offer, many of whom 鈥渉ave very interesting and unique backgrounds that help engage students and relate to the real world.鈥� Specifically, they 鈥渄o a great job of helping students network and gain experience before graduation through internships and on-campus work.鈥� It鈥檚 also well-received that 鈥渟mall class sizes make it easy to ask questions and participate in class,鈥� and there鈥檚 the sense that faculty are 鈥渋nvested in each student鈥檚 learning process, encouraging students to ask them for help if they need it, or to simply stop by during office hours if they want to discuss something.鈥� As one student puts it, Charleston helps 鈥測ou to have a plan and be ready for anything the future can throw at you鈥�and they have the resources to back up these goals.鈥�

Cougars are known for being a 鈥渇un, outgoing, [and] involved community鈥� where 鈥渆veryone is really friendly.鈥� On campus, 鈥渃amaraderie is evident, and morale is high.鈥� The 鈥渦nique and thriving atmosphere that surrounds the college draws many different types of people.鈥� There is 鈥渁 wide variety of backgrounds and personalities of students here,鈥� which many appreciate because it 鈥渁llows students to gain perspective and insight as to how others think and feel.鈥� One student adds that 鈥淢OST students are respectful of others鈥� opinions and beliefs.鈥� Students also engage across different majors: 鈥淲e all mingle together and are friends with people in all different fields of study.鈥� And one student shares, 鈥淭he one thing I love most about the College of Charleston is how we can all come together and co-exist.鈥� Another student agrees, 鈥淎nyone and everyone can find someone to be friends with and fit in with here.鈥�

Students at the College of Charleston 鈥渁re extremely involved鈥�and likely participate in multiple clubs,鈥� not to mention 鈥渧olunteering events, jobs, internships, and study abroad trips.鈥� The school hosts 鈥渢ons of talks and activities鈥� and 鈥渃onstantly keeps us updated on events and opportunities.鈥� With more than 240 options, students say that 鈥渢here are so many clubs to choose from,鈥� including the 鈥淏elly Dance club,鈥� the Esports club, and the Cheese Club (exactly what it sounds like). They also 鈥渓ove going to school sporting events (especially basketball),鈥� and Greek life is singled out as being 鈥渞eally fun鈥�because it is so low-key compared to other colleges.鈥� On the weekends, students might step off campus into the 鈥渧ibrant city鈥� of Charleston, where 鈥渢here is always something happening, whether it be the Fall Arts Festival, an a cappella concert, or a concert.鈥� The college enjoys an excellent relationship with its community, and 鈥渕any local coffee shops are also 鈥渇requented by students and provide a nice place to hang out with friends or study.鈥� Geographically speaking, proximity to the water 鈥渋s icing on the cake,鈥� so students 鈥渄o a lot of beach-going (Charleston is close to several beaches),鈥� and one student鈥檚 weekend rotation involves 鈥淗itting the bars on Friday night, going to the farmer鈥檚 market then beach on Saturdays, while still having energy to study hard [on] Sunday nights.鈥� Another student claims, 鈥淭he great thing about our college is that there is so much going on around here on any given day.鈥�
