Located in eastern Connecticut, the picturesque Connecticut College is a classic private New England liberal arts school that shows a 鈥済reat commitment to being sustainable, to promoting community service, and to learning.鈥� The college provides 鈥済reat academic, extracurricular, and athletic opportunities to all students,鈥� and the 鈥渂eloved鈥� honor code makes for 鈥渁 close-knit, supportive community.鈥� A strong focus on interdisciplinary education, small classes, and self-scheduled exams gives students the autonomy to truly tailor their learning around their interests. The academics are 鈥渞igorous but continuously relevant, interesting, and enlightening.鈥� Most classes are discussion-based, which 鈥渁llows students to express their own opinions while hearing from their fellow students and professors.鈥� Though there are a few bad apples, most professors are always accessible (鈥渆specially outside of their office hours鈥�) and are 鈥渃onstantly bringing learning outside of the classroom, whether it be within a residence hall, a restaurant, museum, or gallery downtown, or within their own homes.鈥� 鈥淎ll of my professors are incredibly engaging and obviously here to excite students about their studies,鈥� says a student. Other high points include the 鈥渁pproachability of the staff,鈥� excellent career office and internship opportunities, and strong residential programs and academic centers that 鈥渉elp students with a myriad of topics.鈥� Connecticut College assures that no student will go through school with 鈥測our typical major/minor pairing鈥�; with certificate programs, tons of research opportunities, independent studies and more, every student 鈥渉as a completely unique and entirely interdisciplinary experience here.鈥�

Students note that Conn 鈥渆mbraces diversity,鈥� although that doesn鈥檛 mean there isn鈥檛 also a sizable population that some describe as 鈥渟mart, probably upper-class, well-dressed, and white.鈥� The common theme among all Conn students is 鈥渢heir active involvement both on campus and off and their desire to be challenged in all aspects of their educations.鈥� Students fit in by 鈥渟howing an interest in their studies, but also carrying on an active social life.鈥� It is fairly easy to find one鈥檚 niche within the community, and 鈥渨hile it might take a semester to become adjusted, there are many groups, teams, and other resources...that help freshmen find a place here.鈥�

Life as a student is all about balancing your school work with your extracurricular activities and choosing which events you want to attend, says one. The residential programs lay a great groundwork for student life, and much of the fun on campus 鈥渋s through social events through the dorms.鈥� It helps that 鈥渆veryone knows one another鈥攂etween offices, custodial staff, campus safety, and students.鈥� There are a wide range of activities to get involved with (everything from athletics, to arts, to activism, to community service, etc.), as well as 鈥渘umerous faculty-led discussions and speakers every week.鈥� Most activities that take place on campus make it 鈥渓ively and interesting.鈥� The campus as a whole is 鈥渧ery friendly, and you are always surrounded by familiar faces,鈥� though the relationship with the town of New London is 鈥渟omething that can always be improved upon.鈥� For fun, students 鈥渁ttend each other鈥檚 events, attend social functions in the student center, grab some coffee at one of our coffee shops, and generally hang out with each other.鈥� The library is 鈥渁 very social place during the week,鈥� and though students work very hard, they 鈥渒now how to have a good time on the weekends鈥濃�攅very weekend there is a variety of on-campus social events (concerts, dances, spoken-word performances) put on by the Student Activities Council. Day trips to Boston and New York are also common.
