Omaha鈥檚 Creighton University is a Jesuit institution that prides itself on 鈥渟haping the whole person,鈥� which means that students find themselves 鈥渆xtremely involved in academic and extracurricular activities.鈥� As for the core class structure, all of its more than four thousand undergraduates must fulfill a set curriculum, with a variety of course options available for all requirements (other than a required one-hour oral communication course). By all accounts, this 鈥渟ets you up very well for success,鈥� with students adding that the process 鈥渘early holds your hand into your first job鈥� and 鈥減repares you for the next step, whether that is medical school, law school, or going out to work in the real world.鈥� Creighton 鈥渨orks so hard to make sure their students are successful learners and thinkers鈥� by offering programs like EDGE, an all-inclusive tutoring, academic coaching, and academic counseling service that doubles as 鈥渁 great platform for advisors to gear students to explore certain classes while remaining on track.鈥� All of this helps in 鈥渃ultivating a safe community where we鈥檙e encouraged to dive into what we believe, figure out what that is exactly, and serve others.鈥� Creighton features an 11:1 student-faculty ratio, which leads to 鈥渞eally awesome relationships with faculty and many opportunities for things like undergraduate research.鈥� Professors go above and beyond in all ways, from doing their best 鈥渘ot to make lectures dry and boring鈥� to being super receptive to students. Courses offered 鈥渁re challenging to say the least,鈥� but because teachers are 鈥渨illing to work on your terms and help at all hours of the day and night,鈥� both in and out of the classroom, it鈥檚 a 鈥渧ery rewarding and manageable鈥� process. Dialogue is also crucial: teachers 鈥渓ove when you ask questions鈥� and many utilize a flipped classroom, where peers teach the rest of the class, which 鈥減rovides a broken-down and simplified way of explaining difficult topics to provide clarification and insight.鈥� Adding to the variety and support offered, there are plenty of 鈥渇ield trips that [are] very interesting and insightful鈥� and opportunities for 鈥渕any upperclassmen [to] participate in research or internships.鈥�

There鈥檚 a sense of togetherness at Creighton, to the extent that, because there鈥檚 an 鈥渆xpectation that you go to class every day and on time...if you don鈥檛, people will reach out.鈥� In short, the community is 鈥渧ery goal-oriented toward their careers,鈥� although not in an oppressive sense. If anything, students describe the atmosphere as 鈥渇un and light-hearted鈥� and note that 鈥渨herever you go you will find a welcoming environment.鈥� (This applies across all grades, with students noting that senior students 鈥渨ork hard to make [first-years] feel at home during the first couple weeks at school.鈥�) Students are in it together, according to those who list 鈥渟ervice and giving back鈥� as a core value, and there鈥檚 an eagerness described for all activities: 鈥淲hen it comes to getting involved with student organizations and other things on campus, students will jump at the chance to do so.

The pace at Creighton tends to be a busy one, and not just because of academic or schoolrelated activities: 鈥淎 lot of students work.鈥� That said, things get a bit more relaxed on weekends, which 鈥渃onsist of sporting events, parties, fraternity events, and the like.鈥� Creighton students are 鈥渧ery supportive of one another and go to all the home soccer, basketball, baseball, and volleyball games for both men and women鈥檚 teams,鈥� and 鈥減eople often take part in sports or group exercise programs on campus.鈥� The city setting also means that the 鈥渃ampus is a few blocks away from Old Market and Midtown which are full of activities, shops, and restaurants,鈥� and there are 鈥渁lso gorgeous outdoor places to go running/walking near downtown when the weather is nice.鈥� Students 鈥渁re encouraged to form clubs and join organizations,鈥� and 鈥渢he resources available to students are absolutely endless.鈥�

Creighton undergrads find that they 鈥渁re basically guaranteed a well-paying job right out of college.鈥� This is partially because 鈥渢he university is well known in the area, [thereby] giving you a leg up in the recruiting process.鈥� Plus, undergrads are adept at leveraging Creighton鈥檚 Omaha location, which offers 鈥渘umerous internships and 鈥� [the chance to] gain experience in a chosen career field.鈥� They are equally fortunate that they can turn to the John P. Fahey Career Center to explore employment options, refine their goals, and sharpen their job search skills. More specifically, students can receive help navigating both phone and face-to-face interviews, negotiating salaries, and answering employer questions through the center鈥檚 Big Interview online training system. Big Interview incorporates AI-based video practice and virtual mock interviews to help instill confidence before the job search begins. Students are also able to avail themselves of the center鈥檚 centralized (and well-organized) database of job and internship sites, cover letter and resume templates, and industry-specific resources.
