As a historic liberal arts college dating back to 1783, Dickinson College 鈥渄oes a great job at working to expose you to as much as possible鈥� and helping students to 鈥渄iscover their interests.鈥� The 鈥渧ery interdisciplinary鈥� environment challenges students to 鈥渢hink critically鈥� and consider 鈥渁lternative points of view,鈥� which, as one enrollee notes, has 鈥渂een transformative in my worldview.... The 鈥減assionate, empathetic, and curious鈥� students at Dickinson 鈥渃are a lot about the world (globally and domestically) and are in large part motivated by...want[ing] to make the world a better place,鈥� which can be seen across a 鈥渃ampus that focuses on human rights and the environment.鈥� This also produces a driven population, as 鈥渋t seems like everybody has something that makes them want to get out of bed in the morning.鈥� While some have noticed a 鈥渟light social divide鈥� between athletes and non-athletes, others say 鈥渁rtistic individuals are friends with athletes on campus and vice versa.鈥� Overall, 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 need to be a specific type of person to succeed here,鈥� and 鈥渆veryone here encourages you to try again instead of putting you down.鈥� Moreover, 鈥渆ach person at this institution has their own unique perspective and is not afraid to share what it is.鈥� The school attracts 鈥渁 lot of people who are bold [and] outspoken.鈥� In this overall positive and supportive environment, students 鈥渇ind ways to comfortably discuss uncomfortable topics鈥� and 鈥渁ppreciate meaningful conversations with one another.鈥�

Dickinson鈥檚 campus features a number of unique facilities and resources, including a makerspace with craft supplies, and an outdoor-gear鈥搇oaning program. There鈥檚 also the Dickinson farm, which supplies organic produce to the local community and dining hall, helping to provide a range of food options. (There鈥檚 also a weekly farmer鈥檚 market and 鈥渁 lot of very good, student-affordable restaurants within walking distance.鈥�) There鈥檚 鈥渁 big emphasis on school spirit,鈥� and students 鈥渁re big on attending sports games.鈥� Another popular activity among this well-rounded student body is attending the Clarke Forum lectures, which host guest speakers, including renowned scholars and celebrated authors. While 鈥渟ome people party,鈥� it鈥檚 overall 鈥渘ot a party school鈥� and 鈥渄rinking is not an expectation,鈥� especially with so many other on-campus activities, as well as shopping and movies in the town of Carlisle. Students appreciate the 鈥渓ively and diverse鈥� music scene that includes a cappella groups, the student-run radio station, and 鈥渂and performances almost every weekend.鈥� And when it comes to keeping busy, they point to how 鈥淢OB鈥攐ur student planning committee鈥攐ften throws amazing concerts and events,鈥� including 鈥渁 winter carnival with indoor obstacle courses.鈥�

Dickinson鈥檚 Advising, Internships & Career Center (AICC) provides personalized support and development through academic advising, internships, externships, and student and alumni career services. Before first-year students set foot on campus, AICC begins the advising and career support process, with phone calls from faculty members helping students select their first semester classes. Students can use the Center鈥檚 detailed Four-Year Pathways success guides to point them in the right direction for resources at each stage of their education. They can also attend a series of career development events during Internship Search Week, ending in the five-hour Resume Rush. Workshops, networking opportunities, alumni career chats, one-on-one consultations, and more are designed to equip students with the tools they need for success as students and as graduates. Payscale.com says that Dickinson graduates earn a median career starting salary of $65,500, and 45 percent derive a high level of meaning from their job.
