There are more than 300 majors, minors, and concentrations available to the undergraduates at Eastern Michigan University, representative of 鈥渢he resources that [the school gives] to the students so that they have a chance to improve on themselves.鈥� Some students take note of 鈥渉ow passionate and dedicated the staff are to their students,鈥� and say that professors 鈥渁re generally accessible and willing to go above and beyond to help you with any questions, projects, or future planning you might have.鈥� There is a feeling that the university values and promotes inclusivity and 鈥渋s constantly creating opportunities for their students to grow, learn, and be integrated into the college lifestyle,鈥� and 鈥渢hey also do a good job of making sure students know about events that are available to them.鈥� Classroom formats vary from projects to lectures to online components, as 鈥渋nstructors always make an effort to make class exciting and more than just a simple teaching course.鈥� For instance, 鈥渁 class focused on disability accessibility had an activity where we tried to navigate the building in a wheelchair.鈥� There are also plenty of chances for 鈥渓earning outside of the classroom through field trips, volunteer opportunities, and student organizations,鈥� including 鈥済oing off site with place-based education directives within the local neighborhood.鈥� Students appreciate that many classes are taught by professors that 鈥渉ave gone out into the world and have held jobs instead of only doing research.鈥� Many also utilize active learning styles in which students 鈥渨atch a video some time before the lecture to prepare ourselves for the lecture, and during the lecture we do a lot of group work and practice questions on the content.鈥� The university offers flexible learning options with 鈥渁 good combination of online and in person instruction that allows for you to study at home to supplement the lecture material.鈥�

EMU has 鈥渁 lot of representation in the student body,鈥� and this is 鈥渁 very unique place in the sense that the student age range is large,鈥� with a mix of 鈥渢raditional college students who have recently graduated high school and first-time college students in their middle adult years.鈥� Students 鈥渁re active on campus and are diverse in their interests, pursuits, and backgrounds鈥� and 鈥渢hrive on teamwork and communication with each other.鈥� One student attests, 鈥淎s a transgender student, I generally feel very welcomed and safe. The campus population is majority white in my experience, but there is a large POC population.鈥� Another agrees, saying that this 鈥渧ery diverse student body...has been an incredible experience and has helped further my understanding of other cultures as well as [making] me a more well-rounded individual.鈥� DEI is also a priority, and 鈥渢here are many events about religion and/or culture that help [students and their] peers connect.鈥� All in all, the school provides an environment in which 鈥渟tudents with a variety of backgrounds are coming together to graduate with a diploma, pursue a career, and become the greater adults of tomorrow.鈥�

Students consider EMU鈥檚 main campus in Ypsilanti small but active. Given that there are 鈥渁 lot of events,鈥� such as 鈥減aint and pour (non-alcoholic) [or] a carving pumpkin contest,鈥� it is 鈥渆asy to connect with people.鈥� Students enjoy the 鈥渄ifferent activities that the different clubs and organizations put on periodically.鈥� Additionally, students 鈥淸go] to the mini golf place Putterz that is near campus,鈥� and also 鈥済o to the gym [or] go to the student center with friends to study.鈥� Although many students are commuters, when not studying, they 鈥渓ike to hang out in the common room and the Eagles [Caf茅s] on the weekends and after class.鈥� The school is 鈥渇ar more affordable than many other options鈥� and there 鈥渁re many job opportunities in the surrounding area鈥� for students looking to earn some extra money (or stay local after graduation). Students note that 鈥渢he atmosphere on the campus is very laid back,鈥� and 鈥渋t鈥檚 very easy to get involved on-campus and to meet new friends.鈥�
