Combining a 鈥渂eautiful location,鈥� 鈥渆xcellent鈥� professors, 鈥渟mall class size,鈥� and a 鈥渉elpful鈥� administration, Fort Lewis College offers a 鈥渜uality education provided in an intimate learning environment coupled with an outgoing and outdoor community.鈥� 鈥淭he professors are wonderfully talented, and many are over-qualified for their positions.鈥� Why do such accomplished professors come here? 鈥淒urango attracts really high-end professors even though it is a small town because it is so beautiful and so many people want to live here.鈥� Professors bring a 鈥渨ell-balanced mix of instructional styles as well as academic, life, and career advice.鈥� And 鈥渢hey are always willing to spend time outside of class tutoring or talking, and most of them use several learning methods in the classroom.鈥� Like the faculty, 鈥淭he administration seems connected and accessible.鈥� It seems as though students can鈥檛 go wrong in choosing a major, as students cite 鈥渁rchaeology, chemistry, teaching majors,鈥� 鈥済reat English and history departments,鈥� 鈥渂usiness鈥� and 鈥渕usic鈥� as academic strengths of the college. But 鈥淏ecause Fort Lewis is a liberal arts institution, you get a very well rounded experience.鈥� And there鈥檚 a 鈥渂onus鈥攏o grad school, so profs teach their own classes.鈥�

You will find on the Fort Lewis College campus an abundance of 鈥渙utdoor loving, open-minded,鈥� 鈥渓aid back,鈥� 鈥渓iberal,鈥� 鈥渟uper artistic, super environmentally aware, intellectual鈥� 鈥渉ippies.鈥� They profess 鈥渁ll ranges of religious beliefs,鈥� and they are 鈥済enerally involved in extracurricular activities, such as intramural sports and outdoor pursuits.鈥� As far as where they all come from, one student estimates that 鈥渢he student body is split in thirds: one-third local, one-third from the Front Range, one-third from all over.鈥� One unique aspect of the Fort Lewis student body is that it 鈥渉as a high Native American population,鈥� as well as a 鈥渓ot of good opportunities specifically for Native Americans.鈥� This in large part is a result of the tuition waiver the school generously offers to all Native American students.

鈥淭he great outdoors are very important鈥� to those who attend Fort Lewis College. 鈥淲inter allows for all sorts of snow sports (snowboarding, skiing, ski-surfing, snowshoeing, ice climbing, winter backpacking/camping), and the summer provides its own set of activities (mountain biking, camping, backpacking, kayaking).鈥� When they鈥檙e not on the mountain or in the river, students 鈥渉ang out in the small downtown area.鈥� 鈥淒owntown Durango is very beautiful and historic. There are tons of cool stores to check out, and there are as many restaurants per capita [as] San Francisco, so you won鈥檛 get bored with the food.鈥� Durango is also 鈥渁 very liberal town. Many residents are, for lack of a better name, 鈥榦ld hippies.鈥� This makes for a small town with big dreams.鈥� Case in point, 鈥淒urango鈥�likes to shut down Main Street to throw random parties, so that鈥檚 right up our alley.鈥� Students enjoy going to the downtown bars, which they describe as 鈥渃hill.鈥� 鈥淎 lot of people drink, but no one judges you if you don鈥檛 (we鈥檒l just ask you for a ride).鈥� One main attraction of the bars is the fact that 鈥渢here is great beer in Durango,鈥� reportedly of the 鈥渇resh brewed鈥� variety. When students get to thinking, they 鈥渢hink about the environment a lot. Durango is a very environmentally friendly town.鈥�
