Georgetown University鈥檚 Jesuit roots are reflected in its educational mission of 鈥渃are for the whole person.鈥� This helps to foster a vibrant intellectual atmosphere, one where classroom learning is 鈥渂alanced with extracurricular learning and development.鈥� The school is also rooted in a spirit of 鈥渞estless inquiry,鈥� and students are encouraged to constantly question the world around them, whether鈥攆or example鈥攊n a robust study abroad program at Georgetown鈥檚 villa outside of Florence, Italy, or an undergraduate course aimed at fighting wrongful convictions. Along with its many stellar academic programs, the university features the standout School of Foreign Service, which, thanks to its direct proximity to Washington D.C., offers key internships in government, 鈥渉igh-profile guest speakers,鈥� and one-of-a-kind networking opportunities, like the chance to discuss conflict resolution with ambassadors. Regardless of major, all Hoyas have access to a 鈥済reat selection of very knowledgeable professors, split with a good proportion of those who are experienced in realms outside of academia...and career academics.鈥� Undergrads also report that the faculty tend to be 鈥渇antastic scholars and teachers鈥� and are 鈥済enerally available to students.鈥� Even better, professors are typically 鈥渋nterested in getting to know you as a person (if you put forth the effort to talk to them and go to office hours).鈥� Finally, while classes are rather rigorous, students emphasize that 鈥淕eorgetown is...a place where people work very, very hard without feeling like they are in direct competition.鈥�

Georgetown鈥檚 global reach is certainly reflected in its student body. With undergraduates hailing from all 50 states and 鈥渁 ton of international students鈥� from over 130 countries, you鈥檒l find plenty of classmates from diverse, well-traveled, and well-educated backgrounds. Even better, students here actively want to learn about different people and experiences and benefit from the fact that roughly one-third of the student body is fluent in more than one language. Many undergrads are also very interested in the goings on of the government, so much so that they advise enrollees to 鈥渉ave at least some interest in politics or you will feel out-of-place.鈥� Overall, students tend to carry themselves with a professional polish that extends from attitudes and interests to wardrobes. To that end, preppy-casual is the fashion de rigueur. Nevertheless, with over 7,000 students, you can rest assured that there are 鈥減lenty of groups for everybody to fit into and find their niche鈥� and even 鈥渕uch crossover between groups.鈥�

Georgetown pulses with an energy and activity that鈥檚 to be expected from a school in the heart of America鈥檚 capital. Students here are motivated and eager to participate in campus life, and 鈥渁re always headed somewhere, it seems鈥攖o rehearsal, athletic practice, a guest speaker, [or] the gym.鈥� Indeed, from the university鈥檚 six a cappella groups and the Guild of Bands (an organization for pop, jazz, and rock ensembles) to club rock climbing and the Georgetown FinTech Club, there鈥檚 so much to take part in. Community service and political activism are especially popular, along with cheering on Georgetown鈥檚 storied basketball team. One thing that students note is that many events, like parties, 鈥渢end to have a somewhat networking atmosphere; meeting people you don鈥檛 know is a constant theme.鈥� Regardless of the activities, Hoyas pride themselves on always learning.

The Cawley Career Education Center helps students answer that perennial question: 鈥淲hat can I do with my major?鈥� The Career Exploration resource allows students to learn about the transferable skills that different majors at Georgetown will help them develop and which types of internships would complement their educational and career goals. The center also encourages experiential learning and examining the career paths of alumni in comparable fields of study through micro-internships and Career Trek. Students can connect with alumni for one-on-one, career-related conversations using the Hoya Gateway platform, and search and apply online for jobs, internships, fellowships, and volunteer gigs in every discipline and city with Firsthand, Interstride, and ArtSearch. The center brings numerous potential employers to the campus through the Career Fair, Government & Nonprofit Expo, and various Industry Weeks. Graduates who visited PayScale.com report a median starting salary of $78,400, of which 47 percent felt their jobs were making a meaningful impact on society.
