The small and innovative Goucher College, located just outside of Baltimore, boasts a welcoming, collaborative learning environment, a 100 percent study abroad rate/requirement, and a liberal arts curriculum that focuses on interdisciplinary complex-problem solving. The foundation for every major is the Goucher Commons Curriculum, which creates shared, problem-based learning experiences across disciplines. The school encourages its students to live outside of their comfort zones when it comes to being 鈥渕indful鈥� of others 鈥渟o as to learn from...diverse perspectives.鈥� Students here are 鈥渃urious to learn鈥� and 鈥渢hrive on engaging in deep conversation, and are not afraid to speak their minds.鈥� Small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio promote these conversations, and 鈥渄iscussion and critical thinking skills are built into every class so you learn or formulate an argument around a wide variety of issues.鈥� As a way of easing the transition into college, Goucher鈥檚 Commons Curriculum features a First Year Seminar that every first-year student is required to take. During the seminar, first-year students 鈥渕eet with their mentor who was with them during orientation to talk about certain resources provided [at] Goucher for safety, and other subjects about racial identity and how we鈥檙e getting acquainted with our new environment.鈥� As for regular classes, there are a ton of 鈥渧ery interesting鈥� classes, and 鈥渋t is easy to enroll in a class that is either full or that you don鈥檛 have the prerequisites for.鈥� Professors receive high marks across the board; they get to know students on a personal level and are 鈥渋nvested in [their] unique reasoning for being a part of the department.鈥� They 鈥渨ant everyone to share their opinions and certain personal experiences that go along with the topic鈥� at hand. 鈥淚 know they see me first as a person, second as a student,鈥� says one happy student.

The Goucher student body comprises 鈥渁 symposium [of students] to do Socrates proud.鈥� Goucher students are 鈥渆ngaged, trust each other, and are brave enough to dialogue in a way most campuses don鈥檛 seem to be anymore.鈥� The degree of political openness here is 鈥渙nly left-looking,鈥� and this 鈥渄elightfully weird鈥� group tends to include 鈥渁lternative, creative, artistic people who aren鈥檛 afraid to express themselves.鈥� Students describe their peers as middle to upper-middle class and from the East Coast. Diversity and inclusivity are strong at Goucher, with nearly half of the student population consisting of people of color, and the Center for Race, Equity, and Identity supporting the sizable BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities on campus. Keeping it in their own backyard, students love to help and 鈥渄o their best to give back to their Baltimore and local community.鈥�

The Goucher campus is 鈥渂eautiful.鈥� When it鈥檚 sunny, 鈥渁 lot of students are outside doing homework, socializing, playing Frisbee, or doing various other physical activities.鈥� During the week, most people work and study (鈥渓ots of people use the library as a common place鈥�), so the weekend 鈥渋s when people hang out.鈥� Not a lot of students go off campus, so a lot of small groups and open mics form. Parties 鈥渁ren鈥檛 all that common.鈥� Students subscribe to the idea that 鈥渁 rising tide lifts all boats.鈥� One student explains, 鈥淭here is no internal competition at Goucher; we all work together.鈥� Sports are becoming more popular, and there are 20 Division III athletic teams and even an equestrian team. Activism is huge on campus, and if you are passionate about a cause with these seemingly 鈥渓iberal, outspoken鈥� students, 鈥渢here is usually a club or student union that is already organized, or students who are more than willing to start a club.鈥�
