Prospective students interested in attending a historically Black college would be hardpressed to find a better option than Howard University. With the 鈥渙utstanding鈥�accomplishments of a great majority of its alumni,鈥� including notable figures like Thurgood Marshall, Elijah Cummings, Toni Morrison, and Kamala Harris, the university has certainly earned its reputation as a 鈥渇ormidable force in producing African American intellectuals.鈥� Howard University takes great care in preparing students 鈥渢o compete on a local and global level,鈥� instilling in them a deep sense of 鈥減ride and excellence.鈥� As one student expresses, 鈥淗oward University is more than a place to get an education; it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that not only strengthens your mind, but also your spirit and pride in who you are as a person and who you have the potential to become.鈥� As you stroll across the campus, you can鈥檛 help but feel 鈥渢he sense of being a part of such a tremendous legacy.鈥� Students benefit from an 鈥渋nspiring faculty鈥� that both 鈥減ushes you and teaches patience.鈥� In addition, professors effectively 鈥渂ridge the gap between the real world and the textbook,鈥� by teaching students how to apply their classroom knowledge to future careers. The majority of the faculty are 鈥渟upportive and helpful鈥� and 鈥渉ave a genuine interest in their subject.鈥� At Howard, classroom discussions are lively and highly encouraged. Given that Howard promotes a 鈥渃ulture of achievement and encouragement,鈥� it鈥檚 not too surprising to learn that students here tend to be 鈥渧ery goal-oriented and driven.鈥� Indeed, it鈥檚 common to find undergrads 鈥渢aking a full course load, working, and interning,鈥� with many also participating in community service and extracurricular activities. However, undergrads aren鈥檛 just high achievers; they鈥檙e also 鈥渇riendly, outgoing, stylish, and fashionable鈥� as well. Many students are 鈥渧ery socially conscious鈥� and often engage in 鈥渄iscussions surrounding social and political issues.鈥� This makes sense, considering that 鈥淗oward students are educated to think on a global scale.鈥� Howard fosters an 鈥渆ver-changing, comprehensive, innovative, and supportive community鈥� where 鈥渟tudents are very accepting of each other.鈥� As this undergrad puts it, 鈥淗oward represents the best of the educated and progressive African American community.鈥�

Life at Howard moves at a fast pace and these students wouldn鈥檛 have it any other way. The campus crackles with energy, from the 鈥渓ively鈥� dorms to the well-attended school events, which are 鈥渁 major part of the social calendar.鈥� In addition, undergrads enjoy taking full advantage of the opportunities available in Washington, D.C. and find the Metro station 鈥渧ery easily accessible.鈥� The campus hosts a wide range of engaging events, including cookie decorating competitions, Karaoke Night, Game Night Mixers, and Entrepreneurship Fest (a showdown where students pitch their business ideas to industry experts and potential investors). Additionally, students are encouraged 鈥渢o be involved in campus organizations and student government,鈥� and with hundreds of clubs to choose from, there鈥檚 something for everyone. Fraternities and sororities are also popular at Howard, although you should dispel ideas of raging keg parties. Indeed, 鈥渢he main focus of our Greek life is community service. Any social event or gathering that is hosted by the Greeks normally has most or all of the proceeds going to a charity or community service project.鈥� There are also 鈥渟tudent-run organizations that work in the community,鈥� providing 鈥渙pportunities to be a part of something bigger than you.鈥�
