Located in Bloomington, Illinois Wesleyan University is a community that 鈥渋nvites you to make the most of your education and is ready to bend over backwards to ensure you enjoy your experience.鈥� Though the school doesn鈥檛 have that big of a reputation outside the Midwest 鈥渄espite its excellent education,鈥� it is an underrated gem that is 鈥渁lways trying to give students opportunities that are beyond what most schools can give.鈥� It truly is 鈥渁 small school that oozes big opportunities.鈥� Professors are 鈥渂rilliant and accessible鈥� 鈥渋nsightful鈥� individuals who are 鈥渢he best in their field.鈥� 鈥淭he exuberance they have for their subject area and their students is very evident.鈥� Many of them are involved in research and 鈥渙ften include students in helping them,鈥� while others are involved in other ways; for example, 鈥渢he [former] mayor of Bloomington is also a political science professor鈥攈ow cool is that!鈥� 鈥淭here have been a few life-changing professors who I am so grateful to have taken their class,鈥� says a business administration major. Facilities and the career center are excellent, there are numerous opportunities for community engagement and research, and 鈥渢here are so many resources and programs that help students who are seeking any type of support, whether it be academic, moral, or health.鈥� Wesleyan also 鈥渄oes a great job getting students ready for graduate school,鈥� and faculty 鈥減ut [a lot of] effort into the information being taught, and really try and relate it to real life.鈥� The school has a reputation for 鈥渙verinvolved students who travel abroad, are the president of three clubs, and still maintain excellent grades.鈥� 鈥淚WU pushes us to excel academically while encouraging us to pursue our passions outside of our schoolwork,鈥� says a student. Overall, IWU is 鈥渁 friendly community where your professors become mentors, your classmates become lifelong friends, and you graduate prepared to make a real difference in the world.鈥�

The typical Wesleyan student 鈥渉as a major that they take great pride in studying鈥� and 鈥渙ften compare workloads to bond.鈥� Students here are 鈥渧ery academically focused鈥� (鈥渋t鈥檚 very rare to find students who don鈥檛 try鈥�) but are also aware that 鈥渉aving a social life is important as well.鈥� Almost everyone is 鈥渧ery liberal and rather artistic鈥� and 鈥渧ery involved with many different activities.鈥� While there are noticeable groups such as 鈥渁thletes, Greek life, and theater kids鈥� which mainly stick together, 鈥渆veryone has friends in other departments and organizations.鈥� There is 鈥渓ots of competition on campus for internships and research opportunities,鈥� but 鈥渆veryone is very helpful when it comes to informing others of opportunities.鈥� A 鈥渓arge percentage鈥� of the campus is Greek life-affiliated.

As with many colleges, there鈥檚 a strong weekday-weekend divide: 鈥淭here is a fair trade of work and play.鈥� Sunday through Wednesday nights, 鈥減eople are studying, going to meetings for clubs, maybe going to an event or two,鈥� but come the weekend, students 鈥渨ill go to parties at fraternity houses or off-campus houses, or go to the bars.鈥� Bloomington鈥� Normal also has a variety of 鈥済reat restaurants鈥� and shopping venues which 鈥渁re fun places to go to on the weekends,鈥� and neighboring ISU offers 鈥渟ome of that big college town culture [that] can be found in the area.鈥� The Office of Student Activities 鈥渄oes a great job having entertainment available for students鈥� and almost every weekend a free event is held in the student center, 鈥渨hether that be a concert, comedian, movie, or other entertainment.鈥� Because 鈥減eople are very receptive to getting work done together,鈥� you can find a 鈥減lethora of study groups,鈥� as well as 鈥済reat opportunities for intellectual discussions鈥� at the coffee shop, and 鈥渟tudents are always in food areas discussing, reading, or doing homework.鈥�
