Iowa State University is the state鈥檚 largest research university, offering more than 100 majors, most notably in the science and technical fields, including an engineering program which is 鈥減ractically unrivaled.鈥� Other standouts include the aerospace program and the journalism and design schools. The school is 鈥渜uick to add new courses on developing technology鈥� and even make some courses available online, and an excellent job placement rate means 鈥渋f you鈥檙e looking to not just get a job but build a career, you鈥檙e in the right place.鈥� Due to the size of the university, there are a lot of opportunities (such as 鈥済etting to tour and even work at some of the cutting-edge research locations in the world鈥�), and teachers will bring in people who work in the field 鈥渢o talk to you about what their job is like so you can network and learn about your opportunities.鈥� In addition to all the classroom and professional resources, there is a largely popular campus lecture series on various topics, and the university is also currently building a student innovation center. 鈥淚f you are willing to work hard, you can accomplish a lot.鈥� The faculty at the school are 鈥渙utstanding鈥� and 鈥渞epresent some of the best instructors in the country.鈥� Professors 鈥渉ave so much knowledge to share鈥� and include 鈥渋nnovative approaches鈥� in which students 鈥渦se technology and applications to do assignments.鈥� 鈥淣ot only are they great teachers, but they鈥檙e great people,鈥� says one student. Classes are hands-on and coursework is 鈥渃hallenging in a way that helps [students] know that [they] will be prepared to perform well鈥� in their future careers, but for anyone struggling with their work, 鈥渢here鈥檚 a lot of help if you look for it.鈥� Overall, students find that Iowa State 鈥渙ffers everything a student needs to succeed鈥� and strives to ensure that every student 鈥渟ucceeds and performs at a high level academically, professionally, and in their personal lives.鈥�

According to some students, Iowa State University 鈥渓acks diversity as a student body.鈥� But students consistently feel that their peers are 鈥渧ery kind, hardworking, and smart,鈥� and tend to be 鈥済enerally a mix of engineering, design, and agriculture students,鈥� all of whom comprise 鈥渁 good mix of people having fun and studying.鈥� There is a sizable number of international students at Iowa State, and the entire student body 鈥渓ooks after one another and are always very helpful toward newcomers.鈥� The 鈥淚owa Nice鈥� idea is 鈥渃learly embodied by the students of Iowa State,鈥� and this is 鈥渁 special breed of people displaying hospitality and kindness in any situation.鈥�

Ames is 鈥渢he perfect college town.鈥� Since Iowa State is the main focus, 鈥渆veryone that lives here cheers for the Cyclones.鈥� The school as a whole has 鈥淢idwest values,鈥� as well as 鈥渁 plethora of extracurricular opportunities to be involved as a leader or for fun.鈥� All of the classes and buildings are located in the same area or near each other to help students avoid being late to class and 鈥渁 walk across campus is usually only 10 minutes.鈥� The fun usually happens on the weekends, with students heading to parties, bars, or sporting events, and there are also 鈥済reat places to go for dinner, movie theaters, and lots of volunteering opportunities鈥� to keep busy. Clubs (over 800!) 鈥渁re huge here鈥� and 鈥渆veryone has their niche.鈥� One student says, 鈥淟iving in a dorm is the best choice鈥� you can make as a first-year student. Dorms often host game tournaments, movie nights, and other events. There鈥檚 a 鈥渟tate of the art鈥� recreation center (and other facilities), and during nice times of the year, people around campus hammock in the trees and go hiking.

Career Services helps students identify majors and careers through its coaching, counseling, and library services; and centrally coordinates available job opportunities through its CyHire employment listing system. Their comprehensive offerings, which are provided for each school鈥檚 departments, serve to get students acclimated to real-world work experiences through job fairs, alumni connections, and internships. Professors also have 鈥渢ons of real-world experience and knowledge鈥� and 鈥渨ill bring in people who work in the field 鈥� so you can network and learn about your opportunities.鈥� All of these efforts result in a 鈥渏ob placement rate [that] is really good鈥�; in fact, Iowa State alumni from the class of 2021 report 91.2% of the class having employment or pursuing further education within six months of graduation, and those who make use of career resources state that 鈥渋f you鈥檙e looking to not just get a job but build a career, you鈥檙e in the right place.鈥� Payscale.com reports that the median starting salary for Iowa State grads is $67,000, and that 51% of graduates find a great deal of meaning in their job.
