At Johns Hopkins University, students learn 鈥渉ow to approach any problem fearlessly.鈥� Academic programs on offer are 鈥渂eyond compare鈥� and provide the opportunity to 鈥渟tudy anything and still be taught by the highest of experts.鈥� As a result, Hopkins attracts students who are 鈥渙verwhelmingly passionate about what they do and aspire to make an impact in their field.鈥� Students also enroll for the 鈥渁vailability of resources, research, internship, and job opportunities [that] are unmatched.鈥� One Hopkins student offers an example: 鈥淥ne of my art history major friends curated his own exhibit in a gallery downtown (with work from several world-renowned artists) as his research project.鈥� Professors 鈥渕ake themselves very accessible to their students for coffee chats, career advice or even just to give life advice.鈥� One student describes professors as 鈥渁lmost giddy even鈥� to provide individualized guidance for students. And it鈥檚 common for instructors to be 鈥渕ore than willing to push class topics beyond the confines of the textbook to expose us to the implications of the topics discussed in class.鈥� Thoughtful debate is made easier in Hopkins鈥檚 鈥渞igorous but very cooperative鈥� environment as the community is 鈥渟mall enough for strong interactions among students.鈥� Overall, Hopkins provides 鈥渦nparalleled opportunities to pursue research, form strong relationships with professors, and learn from an outstanding group of peers.鈥�

Hopkins students are known for being 鈥渢he type that thrive under pressure.鈥� Though they may 鈥渃ome from various backgrounds and have vastly different experiences,鈥� this batch of 鈥渧ery intellectually curious and smart鈥� students are united as 鈥渁mbitious workhorses鈥� with a desire 鈥渢o be on the forefront of innovation.鈥� In addition, there are 鈥渁 lot of international people and people from various backgrounds鈥� who are 鈥渋nvested in the livelihood of the Hopkins community.鈥� Some might find that there appear to be 鈥渁 lot of introverts鈥� around, though others point out that 鈥減eople are very nice and helpful.鈥� And one student confesses that the average Hopkins student 鈥渨orks really hard, and knows how to cut loose as well.鈥� All in all, a Hopkins student 鈥渂rings something unique to the school whether it is their love for art, school spirit at sporting events, or their desire to find a cure for cancer.鈥�

Experiencing life in Baltimore, Maryland, is intrinsic to the Hopkins experience. The affordable city offers a 鈥済reat music and food scene,鈥� and nearby Mount Vernon has 鈥渇antastic food and culture.鈥� Neighborhoods such as Fells Point and Federal Hill offer nightlife attractions; Orioles and Ravens games are favorite student pastimes. That said, students are candid that only a fraction of the campus seems to engage in other social activities, like going 鈥渙ut to parties and bars,鈥� which creates the sensation that 鈥渋t鈥檚 always the same people you see out.鈥� Put frankly, 鈥渟ome of the students prefer to study all the time鈥� or to stay among the campus鈥檚 picturesque brick buildings. Of course, many students also find that their time 鈥渞evolves around clubs and organizations.鈥� Hopkins has over 400 undergraduate student-run organizations. There are 24 varsity sports teams; most play Division III, but the Division I lacrosse teams are a student favorite. Fans are known to 鈥済et really involved in the season.鈥� Enrollees acknowledge that the school鈥檚 reputation as one of America鈥檚 first research universities is well-earned, such that 鈥渃oncerts [and] symposiums with famous guest speakers鈥� are quite popular.

While individual schools have their own career services and labs, the unique Life Design Lab (LDL) at Johns Hopkins fills the traditional role of a schoolwide career services department while having Life Design Educators within the various academic departments to ensure students are acquiring the right skills and exploring all of the career pathways specific to their field. The LDL also helps students build an alumni network of professionals in their chosen fields and coordinate panels, on-campus recruiting, and other events throughout the year. In addition, undergrads can receive more traditional guidance such as resume and cover letter writing, mock interviews, and alumni mentoring opportunities through the JHU-specific OneHop online platform. If you ask Hopkins undergrads to summarize their career services office in one word, it would likely be 鈥渁wesome.鈥� And that鈥檚 no surprise. After all, you know the school is doing something right when 59 percent of graduates report high job satisfaction and feel their work makes the world a better place. Undergraduates from the university report a median starting salary of $81,100 (according to PayScale.com).
