Loyola Marymount University is a Catholic university founded in the Jesuit tradition. These roots are reflected in the academics, which often incorporate 鈥渆thical views from the Jesuit practices.鈥� Students find the overall academic experience to be 鈥渃hallenging and fulfilling.鈥� As one student says, 鈥淟MU courses put you to work鈥攏ot busy work, but meaningful work that you will learn from.鈥� Students describe an atmosphere where 鈥渆verybody is willing to help each other鈥� and fellow classmates are 鈥渙pen to collaboration on assignments and projects so that everyone can be successful.鈥� As one student puts it, 鈥淣ever have I felt a sense of rivalry or competition amongst my peers.鈥� The faculty are described as being 鈥渕ore like mentors鈥� who are 鈥渧ery friendly鈥� and 鈥渁ttentive to students鈥� questions and concerns.鈥� As one student puts it, 鈥淭he professors at LMU want to see you succeed and will do anything to help you do that.鈥� This is good news for career-oriented students, as 鈥減rofessors will genuinely make an effort to connect students with internship[s]鈥� and 鈥渓ead you to many different opportunities on and off campus.鈥� Students appreciate the hands-on approach taken in many classes, whether it鈥檚 film students getting experience 鈥渄irecting or using a camera,鈥� marketing students collaborating with 鈥渞eal businesses,鈥� or science classes traveling to 鈥渧arious field sites during lab time, such as the beach, hikes, parks, and Catalina Island.鈥�

Students describe their peers as 鈥渃reative, progressive, and passionate.鈥� Although some report that LMU doesn鈥檛 have the stereotypical 鈥渟chool spirit because we are a smaller school with less of an emphasis on sports,鈥� overall LMU is 鈥渧ery social.鈥� One student emphasizes that it鈥檚 鈥渟till surprising after three semesters how kind and friendly people are here.鈥� Many students describe 鈥渁 very diverse student body,鈥� while others say LMU could improve on diversity. One common theme from students is that the campus is a place that鈥檚 鈥渃omposed of communities for all kinds of people to fit in鈥� with programming that 鈥渃aters to every student.鈥� Students say that LMU 鈥渇eels like a small community where everyone know each other, which is very nice.鈥� As one person describes it, 鈥淵ou can make friends just by chatting with people in a line at a dining place on campus.鈥� Overall, students describe a community that is 鈥渢ight knit and very supportive of each other.鈥� And as one student sums up, 鈥淵ou can always find your group of people where you fit in.鈥�

The campus provides many opportunities to soak up the sunshine, including the lawns of the Sunken Gardens and the Bluff and 鈥渉aving views of both the ocean and LA never gets old.鈥� Students also enjoy using the gym and attending the workout classes, where instructors 鈥渇oster a fun environment.鈥� Another favorite event is Wellness Wednesdays, a weekly market where 鈥渟mall businesses set up booths and showcase their items for sale.鈥� Students at LMU 鈥渇ill their day with extracurricular activities.鈥� Outdoor recreation is popular, including surfing and hiking as well as intramural sports like beach volleyball and soccer. 鈥淓veryone is involved in something,鈥� explains one student. Whether it鈥檚 rock climbing, open mic night, cultural clubs, Greek life, service organizations, or 3D printing, there is 鈥渟omething here for everyone.鈥� For getting off-campus, exploring Los Angeles is a frequent activity. LMU provides a shuttle to the nearby neighborhood of Playa Vista where students often shop at the farmer鈥檚 market or see a movie. Students note that exploring beyond Playa Vista requires the use of a car, but for many, the proximity to all of what LA offers is a big perk. As one student who loves exploring the city says, 鈥淚鈥檝e been here four years and I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of what is here.鈥�

The Career and Professional Development (CPD) program at LMU prioritizes students鈥檚 professional development with access to numerous internship, career, and networking resources. With its proximity to Silicon Beach, where over 500 tech companies and start-ups reside alongside industry leaders like Snapchat and Google, LMU鈥檚 location is 鈥渁mazing for networking opportunities.鈥� CPD connects students and alumni through a networking and mentoring platform called The Pride. Many of these alumni work at one of the over 525,000 companies that LMU students have access to through Handshake, LMU鈥檚 online career management portal. It鈥檚 common for undergrads to visit alumni in Los Angeles and other cities through the Career Treks program in order to learn about potential careers and 鈥渂roaden their understanding of various industries and occupations.鈥� The CPD holds multiple career weeks throughout the year, with some targeting specific fields of interest, such as Biz + STEM, Arts + Entertainment, and Social Impact career weeks. CPD boasts over 2,000 internship opportunities, which 93 percent of students complete during their time at LMU. And there is the Summer Internship Funding grant, which helps students whose summer internships are under or unpaid. Payscale.com states that LMU graduates have a median starting salary of $69,800.
