Students who earn the opportunity to study at Loyola University Maryland get to 鈥渢ake some awesome classes that will completely change your perspective on the world.鈥� As part of Loyola鈥檚 鈥渇antastic core curriculum,鈥� students get 鈥渁 solid foundation in the natural sciences, English, history, philosophy, and theology.鈥� Students emphasize that the three distinct colleges devoted to arts and sciences, business, and education 鈥渁re outstanding and the coursework is challenging.鈥� There鈥檚 also robust academic support: the 鈥渃areer center is open for students starting at day one.鈥� The 鈥渆xcellent study abroad program鈥� is particularly popular, with some 60% of students studying internationally over the course of their undergraduate career. With a very manageable student-to-faculty ratio, professors 鈥済et to know you personally, take time out of their office hours to have intellectual discussions, show you how to learn and how to teach, and help you out when you are having difficulties.鈥� One student reports that their instructors 鈥渁ctually know each of their students by name.鈥� Moreover, instructional strategies consider 鈥渄ifferent learning techniques to cater to everyone鈥檚 different learning styles.鈥� Students love that it鈥檚 鈥渇airly common for professors to give out their personal cell phone numbers or to even invite the class to their home for dinner.鈥�

With a student body nearly 4,000 strong, Greyhounds value being able to 鈥渇ind their niche at Loyola very quickly.鈥� Loyola attracts students who 鈥渃are about their academics and do well in school, but they also try to balance that with extracurriculars and their spiritual life.鈥� The vibe on campus is 鈥渞eally welcoming and trustworthy鈥� and fosters a 鈥済reat sense of community.鈥� Some students feel that 鈥渢he student body may appear homogeneous,鈥� with a population where 鈥渕any of the students are white鈥� and often hail from the East Coast. A plurality also self-identify as Catholics. Beneath that surface, attendees explain that 鈥渆veryone can fit in well,鈥� especially when you 鈥渋mmerse yourself in the opportunities Loyola has to offer.鈥� As one Greyhound puts it best, Loyola students 鈥渓ive out the core values of the university and enjoy being a contributing member of the school community.鈥�

Affectionately known as Greyhounds, Loyola students find the 鈥渞ight balance between religion, spirituality, and the everyday life of college students.鈥� True to its Jesuit legacy, Loyola offers 鈥渁mazing opportunities to get involved in the Baltimore community through service,鈥� a learning experience that students positively describe as 鈥渁n extension of the classroom.鈥� (Students also say they enjoy just 鈥渨alking around the harbor.鈥�) With its primary undergraduate campus in northern Baltimore City, 鈥渕ost students live on campus鈥� and those who move into suites and apartments can enjoy such amenities as 鈥渇ull kitchens in your dorm by sophomore year.鈥� Staying central to campus allows Greyhounds to easily attend the 鈥渘umerous speakers, movies, events, [and] sporting events鈥� available on campus. Student athletes compete in the Patriot League, and Loyola boasts eight men鈥檚 and nine women鈥檚 varsity sports teams. Don鈥檛 expect any stereotypically wild parties, as 鈥渢here is no Greek life鈥� on campus and there are strict rules for 21-year-olds about where they can have alcohol; some students note that they instead 鈥済o out to bars on Fridays and Saturdays.鈥� However, late-night students swear by Midnight Breakfast at the Boulder Cafe, and come spring, students of all stripes can be found enjoying Loyolapalooza, a music festival for the entire student body to enjoy before finals. Like the Greyhounds they take their name from, students are 鈥渂usy doing loads of homework, projects, reading, community service, clubs, lectures, [and] sports,鈥� and they鈥檙e happy doing it.
