At Marist University, faculty 鈥渓ike to make classes interactive yet challenging in a positive aspect.鈥� They also value real-life experience and connections in their classrooms. 鈥淚 have had faculty...[in contact with] a finance firm...within minutes of me mentioning interest in working there,鈥� says a student. Professors are 鈥渉ighly qualified,鈥� 鈥渄iverse in the way they teach,鈥� and 鈥渁lways willing to help,鈥� both in and out of class. 鈥淭he academics are the best thing about Marist,鈥� says another student. Support staff and advisors are also highly praised for being 鈥渟ome of the most supportive people.鈥� The Honors program at Marist is 鈥渁 huge strength because it unlocks many advantages鈥� by 鈥淸exploring] unique perspectives on topics related to all sorts of majors.鈥� Honors courses include 鈥渁 class on the ethical implications of emerging technology [and] an economics course focused on why nations fail.鈥� One course even involves 鈥渞iding a boat up and down the Hudson River鈥� in order to examine the environment of the area.

Students identify the community at Marist as 鈥渋ncredibly friendly,鈥� and they point out that students have an unspoken 鈥減olicy to hold the door open for people,鈥� 鈥渘o matter the weather condition.鈥� One student commented: 鈥淚鈥檝e never met so many friendly strangers in New York in my life.鈥� Another observes that 鈥渘early everyone...is Catholic, but the majority are not religious.鈥� While many students herald Marist for its diversity, others claim that appears more 鈥渙n paper鈥� than on campus. The dominant groups on campus appear to be 鈥渁thletes,鈥� 鈥渋n the fashion department,鈥� or those 鈥渟tudying computers/ technology.鈥� 鈥淚 find that students are very hungry for knowledge,鈥� says a student. A large portion of the student body also likes to give back: it鈥檚 common for students to 鈥減articipate in two hours of weekly community service...[or] help with one-time community-service events.鈥�

Marist is near the Hudson River, so students often 鈥渇ill their days by walking along and laying out...when [the weather] is nice.鈥� In the winter, 鈥渟tudents may be sledding on snow days or getting together with friends鈥� elsewhere. 鈥淎 big tradition is jumping into the Hudson River before you graduate,鈥� says a student. Indeed, Marist鈥檚 beauty, which 鈥渘ever fails to amaze鈥� students, offers nearby Rhinebeck and New Paltz for hiking and access to the Walkway Over the Hudson, as well as the chance to just walk around the 鈥渞ich community.鈥� For study time, there are campus Caf茅s, and 鈥渢here are a lot of cute [off-campus Caf茅s] around Poughkeepsie鈥� too. The library 鈥渋s a very popular hub for studying, group work, or just [hanging] out.鈥� Clubs and intramurals 鈥淸give] the campus life after dark.鈥� Students also mention that 鈥渢he student center often holds events like bingo nights, stand-up [comedy nights], and more.鈥� Outside of participating either in sports or clubs, many students 鈥渋ntern in NYC several times a week while also maintaining a social life.鈥�
