01. Overview

What the school is known for:

Michigan State University makes the most of its size, with students impressed by the 鈥渁mount of resources available,鈥 including 鈥済reat鈥omen鈥檚 student services,鈥 and the 鈥渧ariety of courses鈥here鈥檚 something for everyone here鈥 with more than 400 academic programs and 300 study abroad options. MSU may be big, but students feel seen, citing challenging and 鈥渃reative and hands-on鈥 classes in which 鈥渃uriosity is encouraged, ideas are valued, and learning feels connected to something bigger.鈥 In the classroom, teachers use a wide range of pedagogical methods to keep students engaged, including 鈥渇ieldwork, peer presentations, and discussions that connect what we learn to current events,鈥 and 鈥渕any courses have a 鈥榝lipped format,鈥 allowing more opportunities for students to ask questions in class.鈥 Classes also incorporate modern technology like 鈥渙nline learning platforms, adaptive testing tools, and virtual tutoring systems that personalize instruction for students.鈥 According to one biochemistry major, 鈥淢SU鈥檚 emphasis on active learning and real-world application makes the academic experience feel dynamic and meaningful.鈥 Students largely attribute this to how 鈥減rofessors and TAs put so much effort into making the learning experience enjoyable and worthwhile.鈥 They are 鈥渧ery helpful, especially with office hours and help room, always doing their best to make you succeed.鈥 Spartans generally concur that the staff is the heart of the school, as they 鈥済enuinely care and want to see you succeed. They do their best to send various opportunities and foster connections with important figures in your field.鈥 Small surprise, then, that some students describe their time at MSU as 鈥渘ot just about earning a degree, but about discovering what I鈥檓 passionate about and how I want to make an impact after graduation.鈥

06. Student Body

What students say:

With so many students, MSU鈥檚 East Lansing campus 鈥渋s pretty diverse, with people from all of Michigan and around the world,鈥 and the variety of backgrounds creates a 鈥渧ery inclusive environment that supports getting a hard-earned education.鈥 This student body potpourri 鈥渕akes campus life vibrant and eye-opening,鈥 populated by individuals who 鈥渁re passionate not only about academics but also about making a difference through research, leadership, creative expression, and community involvement.鈥 While the size of the school can be daunting at first, most say that 鈥渘o matter where you came from, what you believe in, or what your hobbies are, there is a group that feels the same.鈥 Another reinforces that 鈥渋t can take time to find your place, but once you do, those smaller communities feel supportive and connected, and you still get that shared Spartan pride.鈥

08. Campus Life

What students say:

MSU鈥檚 verdant 5,200-acre campus has 鈥済reat accessibility with sidewalks and walking paths,鈥 and 鈥渁 lot of people run or just go for walks.鈥 Students 鈥渞eally appreciate the effort MSU puts into making sure students stay safe and healthy.鈥 For instance, one student remarks that the 鈥渇ood in the dining halls is exceptional.鈥 Another adds, 鈥淲e have so many places, including the arboretum, that are amazing spaces to get outside and just breathe.鈥 As a Division I school with 23 varsity teams, 鈥渟ports are a big part of the culture here.鈥 Students say that 鈥済oing out to tailgates with friends beforehand is a great experience,鈥 and 鈥渢eam spirit is very present, with people yelling 鈥楪o Green鈥 and 鈥楪o White.鈥欌 Students say they鈥檝e 鈥渓earned so much from other perspectives鈥 at Round Table discussions offered by the Mutual Respect, Understanding, Learning, & Empathy program, they鈥檝e 鈥渉ad the opportunity to experience new things while on campus for free鈥 through the University Activities Board, and have found 鈥渄ifferent ways to grow and make an impact鈥 through work on the President鈥檚 Advisory Council. In short, 鈥淭here is always something happening on campus, and those moments remind me of the pride and energy that come with being a Spartan.鈥

What students say:

Michigan State University鈥檚 Career Services Network (CSN) provides extensive support to students as they explore majors and prepare for the future. CSN connects students with career advisors, offering personalized guidance with choosing a major, preparing r茅sum茅s and cover letters, practicing interview strategies, and navigating job or internship searches. One student remarks, 鈥淭he greatest strength of Michigan State University for undergraduate students is their career services network, which is exceptional.鈥 Students can schedule one-on-one advising sessions with 鈥済reat advisors鈥 who, as one student says, 鈥淸have helped] me follow my goals, find internships and a career choice I am happy with.鈥 Through CSN, students can also access career assessments and Handshake, MSU鈥檚 career platform, where students can explore thousands of job and internship postings and register for any of the 25+ career fairs MSU holds annually. One student shares that 鈥淏ig companies frequently visit MSU to give speeches and recruit students for employment or internships, offering them a head start on their careers.鈥 Students appreciate that 鈥渢here is a lot of help available when it comes to figuring out your future career and getting internships.鈥 Additional resources include tools to explore career fields by major, networking tips, free professional attire and headshots to prepare for interviews, and guidance on using LinkedIn and other career platforms effectively. MSI is very proud of its worldwide alumni network. 鈥淚t is very clear that Spartans helping Spartans is real. MSU alumni are often help[ing] others find jobs, network within a field, supply scholarships, and empower other Spartans in so many ways,鈥 says one undergrad. One satisfied student adds, 鈥淭here are a lot of opportunities for networking and career building. The school does as much as possible to provide students and graduates with opportunities to work immediately after graduating.鈥 According to PayScale.com鈥檚 reporting, the median early-career salary for MSU graduates is $70,300, with 25 percent entering STEM fields.
