At Michigan Technological University, 鈥渆ngineering is a part of everybody鈥檚 life鈥� and students take pride in having a 鈥渞eally good reputation鈥� and 鈥渧ery high standards鈥� in that field. And while students, also known as Huskies, take the time to mention the 鈥渂eautiful (often snowy) environment,鈥� they emphasize that the school鈥檚 160 undergraduate programs are 鈥渟erious study,鈥� with everything from STEM-focused subjects in polymer science, wildlife ecology and conservation, and cybersecurity, to jazz studies and writing. These 鈥渃hallenging鈥� courses bring with them a strong emphasis on 鈥減athways for career development and professional advancement,鈥� and popular class activities include things like building nanosatellites and making prosthetic limbs. Moreover, in addition to 鈥渓ots of internship and co-op opportunities,鈥� Huskies have clocked more than 132,000 paid undergraduate research hours in recent years. Many students say that the 鈥渃oncentrated courses are great,鈥� though some say that general education courses can be 鈥渉uge鈥� and 鈥渋mpersonal.鈥� That said, students feel that 鈥渢he more time you put into your program, the professors become more interactive, and the experience becomes more meaningful.鈥� And throughout, 鈥渢he administration in every department works hard to answer questions and help out as much as possible.鈥� Ultimately, across all subjects, students feel that, 鈥淢ichigan Tech provides an atmosphere that nurtures learning鈥� and 鈥減ushes students to excel academically.鈥�

By and large, Huskies are 鈥渄own-to-earth, friendly people,鈥� who 鈥渁re looking to get a good education and are fairly laid-back.鈥� Students are up in the air about which takes precedence some suggest that 鈥渕ost people think about classes first, hanging out second,鈥� while others find them to be 鈥済reat at balancing school and hanging out.鈥� Students do note that the student 鈥渞atio is a little guy-heavy,鈥� but overall, 鈥渢he sense of community is remarkable,鈥� with one student noting that though there are nearly 6,000 undergraduates on campus, 鈥測ou start to see people you know everywhere....It is really easy to find a friend and talk to someone.鈥� That happens more often than not, as the typical Husky 鈥渋s smart and a little more introspective than average.鈥� Above all, even when it鈥檚 cold outside, it鈥檚 warm among peers: 鈥渢he atmosphere is very friendly.鈥�

Nestled 鈥渋n a small town in the middle of the deep North woods,鈥� Michigan Tech attracts students who love the winter. 鈥淲inters are long and cold up here,鈥� explains one student, and there are plenty of 鈥渨inter activities to be a part of.鈥� Students enjoy access to Mont Ripley, home of 鈥渉iking, biking, four-wheeling, skiing, [and] snowmobiling鈥� and Husky pride is on display during Winter Carnival, 鈥渁 long weekend off from classes where students build giant, impressive snow sculptures, play broomball, [and] stay out all night.鈥� Students also mention 鈥渉ouse parties and moderate drinking/merrymaking [to] warm up the cold winters.鈥� Many stay warm by keeping active, and with 鈥渙ver 200 clubs,鈥� students say 鈥渢here are a lot of opportunities to get involved.鈥� Student athletes compete across 14 NCAA sports, including seven men鈥檚 teams and seven women鈥檚 teams. The campus itself is 鈥渋ncredibly safe鈥� and supports a 鈥渟trong student community.鈥� With students who are both 鈥渙utdoorsy鈥� and like to 鈥渟tay in and play video games,鈥� Huskies generally 鈥渨ork hard during the week and look forward to relaxing and having fun on the weekends.鈥�

鈥淐areer services are unbelievable here. If you work for your degree and earn it, participate in co-ops or internships (and the opportunities to do so are ample), you are almost guaranteed a job out of college.鈥� Students sing high praise for Michigan Tech鈥檚 resources for the workforce: 鈥淭he [school鈥檚] biggest strength is the Career Services鈥�There is a fall and spring career fair so getting internships and co-ops is slightly better than other universities.鈥� The Career Services department is 鈥渞eally helpful in working with you to find a job/internship/co-op.鈥� While 74 percent of studies are in the STEM field, some students wished there were 鈥渕ore internships, etc. for majors that are not engineering.鈥� However, the University offers introductions to a variety of industries through CareerFEST鈥攁 series developed from the results of MyPLAN assessments, in which students inventory their interests. From 鈥淎erospace Day鈥� to 鈥淢edical Careers Week,鈥� Michigan Tech invites corporations for 鈥淚ndustry Days鈥� to discuss career options and the futures of various industrial sectors. As students begin to chart their career paths, Career Services provides access to mock interviews, r茅sum茅 critiques, one-on-one peer information sessions, and the digital platform Handshake, which connects undergraduates to potential employers and internship leaders. According to PayScale.com, students report a median starting salary of $78,000, 49 percent of which feel their work has a meaningful impact on society.
