One of the best parts about Saint Joseph鈥檚 University is 鈥渢he dedication to service and experiential learning.鈥� This is baked into the requirements for many majors, and the Service-Learning program incorporates weekly volunteering opportunities into the coursework. Says one student: 鈥淭he entire year I was at the same service site, allowing me to build genuine relationships with the people at my site who I鈥檇 see every week.鈥� Students also value 鈥渕any opportunities to learn off-campus, such as the Inside-Out program鈥� where students 鈥渧isit local prisons鈥� and build empathy by learning alongside the incarcerated population. The SJU Study Tours program helps students extend their classroom learning: 鈥淸I] went to Northern Ireland, and it was so enlightening and really reinforced what we learned in class.鈥� On-campus programs are known for being likewise interactive and engaging, and students report that the business and health science programs are standouts. The Haub Innovative Speaker Series invites professionals 鈥渢o come to campus and offer insights to students,鈥� and one nursing student appreciates being able to 鈥渏ump into clinicals our second year of school, which is great.鈥� In the classroom, students report that the 鈥渟tudent-to-teacher ratio is really amazing. It allows you to build a close connection to your teachers and feel like you could ask them for help.鈥� SJU students point to their professors as the 鈥渂est parts of my academic experience鈥�The classes can be challenging, but you feel like you鈥檙e learning things that actually matter for your future career.鈥� Students enjoy a 鈥済ood balance between lectures, labs, and real application鈥� and describe their academic experience as 鈥渄emanding but supportive.鈥�

鈥淢y peers at Saint Joseph鈥檚 are a mix of hardworking, supportive, and down-to-earth students,鈥� says one Hawk. 鈥淢ost people are really focused on their majors鈥�What stands out is how willing students are to help each other, whether it鈥檚 sharing notes, forming study groups, or explaining a tough topic after class.鈥� While it feels like many students are from the greater 鈥淧hiladelphia and New Jersey suburbs,鈥� students report that 鈥渢here is a large amount of variety here at SJU, with different people having different goals and aspirations in life鈥�Students are kind and helpful if you don鈥檛 know how something works.鈥� As one Hawk sums it up: 鈥淥ur community is our strength by FAR. It is lovely to see such a great community where we all have several ties to each other and care for each other鈥檚 needs and concerns.鈥�

At SJU, 鈥渁lmost everyone is in some sort of extracurricular.鈥� For many, spending time with friends means joining in 鈥渁ctivities that involve community outreach,鈥� and service is 鈥渁 huge part of a lot of students鈥� lives on campus.鈥� As one Hawk explains it: 鈥淲e have a large amount of clubs and programs dedicated to service, since we are a Jesuit school. I am personally part of a club that advocates for refugees and migrants around the world.鈥� Spending time with friends on campus can also involve sports. With a robust intramural program and D1 collegiate teams, athletics at SJU are 鈥渞eally great, they always try to get everyone involved, and the games are always super fun to attend.鈥� Student football fans are particularly enthused about a recent partnership with the Philadelphia Eagles, featuring 鈥渄efined internships, associate roles, and game-day positions.鈥� Beyond campus, students 鈥済o into Manayunk for nightlife鈥�Philly is also nearby, and it is easy to take the train there to grab something to eat, go shopping, or see a sporting event.鈥� Overall, service clubs and sports 鈥渁re a great way to get involved and are really how students will have the best time here at Saint Joe鈥檚.鈥�
