Skidmore College 鈥渙ffers a strong liberal arts curriculum with abundant opportunities to engage professionally with coursework and fields of study.鈥� Students appreciate that creativity seems to be a foundation of academics, 鈥渨ith the arts being well mixed into all areas of study,鈥� and a 鈥渕ind and hand鈥� integration of classroom and experiential learning that offers a flexible curriculum. As a result, there are 鈥渕any interdisciplinary experiences and projects鈥� that students can use in plotting their educational path, along with 鈥渋ndividualized support and care to their students鈥� to get them there and a 鈥渧ery big emphasis on mental health awareness and advocacy.鈥� Professors are 鈥渋ncredibly engaged in the material they are teaching鈥� and succeed in 鈥渂ringing it to life and encouraging passion for the subjects.鈥� Faculty 鈥渁re very supportive and engaging鈥� and 鈥渨illing to support student learning outside the classroom.鈥� The school also taps the outside world for resources, and 鈥渄oes a great job bringing in visiting professionals to teach classes, lead workshops, and give lectures on campus that expand the learning goals in the classroom.鈥� There鈥檚 also access to practical career training, as one student illustrates: 鈥淚 trained in wilderness first aid, and they鈥檙e offering an EMT course in the spring.鈥� Altogether, students receive 鈥渁 foundation to understand the basics but most importantly鈥�how to apply what [you] learn to real-world situations.鈥�

Students here 鈥渁re driven and tend to put schoolwork first,鈥� and are 鈥渉ighly motivated and care deeply about their academic performance.鈥� Most are also 鈥渋nvolved with [the arts] in some way, even if it is not their primary area of study,鈥� and many 鈥渉ave two majors that don鈥檛 seem to correlate thematically but end up tying together through creativity in unexpected ways.鈥� It follows that friend groups tend to be 鈥渧ery diverse here鈥攍ess so based on interests, more so based on personalities,鈥� but 鈥渋t鈥檚 easy to strike up a conversation with someone new.鈥� That being said, the school is still intimate enough that 鈥渆veryone knows everyone, and after four years here it鈥檚 strange to be in a room where you don鈥檛 know anybody.鈥� Everyone 鈥渃omes from somewhere different and interesting and those attributes are reflected鈥� in the student body, and 鈥測ou can expect to meet a lot of people with diverse interests that bring them here.鈥� At Skidmore, 鈥渆mphasis is placed on creative thought鈥�and students are quick to deviate from popular trends,鈥� making for a crowd of 鈥渙pen-minded individuals with a good sense of individuality.鈥� Curiosity is an overarching theme, and those 鈥渨ho are not locked into a specific field tend to think very outside of the box and want to try new things.鈥� Overall, students 鈥渁re incredibly proud of their backgrounds and their interests鈥�[and] there is a great feeling of school spirit and pride.鈥�

Skidmore students are 鈥渋nvested in extracurriculars鈥� and are 鈥渆njoyers of the outdoors.鈥� They appreciate that 鈥渢here are plenty of on-campus events run by cultural clubs or others鈥� with 鈥渇ree food and free entertainment.鈥� There鈥檚 also an Outing Club that offers structured events for the many students who 鈥済o hiking, skiing, [and take] day trips to [New York City].鈥� Students also feel encouraged to get active because there are 鈥渞eally nice athletic facilities for athletes and non-athletes,鈥� with 鈥減lenty of opportunities to play pickup basketball or pretty much any sport casually.鈥� A student mentions that 鈥淸we] don鈥檛 have a football team, but the ultimate Frisbee team functions like that socially.鈥� Everything 鈥渋s so close together鈥� on this cozy campus, which is 鈥渂eautiful, especially in the fall,鈥� and students can easily 鈥渨alk around in clothes they handmade in the Idea Lab and host celebratory events for the different cultures with which they identify.鈥� One student says, 鈥淭here are so many things to do, and most students take those opportunities.鈥�

According to Skidmore College, its 鈥淐areer Development Center helps students develop a holistic view of their career development plan, offering programs and services for students in each year to foster enhanced self-awareness, exposure to a variety of career fields, participation in off-campus experiential activities, [and] effective career decision-making.鈥� A Summer Experience Fund provides grants to students completing unpaid summer internships and experiences locally, nationally, or abroad. The Susan Hirsch Schwartz Fund provides monetary assistance to students receiving financial aid, which can be used on off-campus job fairs, networking receptions, and application and test prep fees. Skidmore鈥檚 Career Communities provide students with frameworks for what majors might best suit their interests and abilities, as well as the different career options and potential employers available to them in that major. Potential employers can also be found at numerous events such as the annual Career Jam, fall internship fair, and Skidmore Recruitment Week. According to PayScale.com, the median starting salary for a Skidmore graduate is roughly $64,000, and 51 percent of graduates consider their careers to be making a meaningful impact in the world.
