A historically Black women鈥檚 institution, Spelman College has built a strong reputation for 鈥渕olding intelligent, goal-oriented young ladies into determined, successful, free-thinking women.鈥� Many prospective students are attracted to the school鈥檚 鈥減owerful history,鈥� including the 鈥渓ong list of successful, educated, strong Black women who have attended Spelman College鈥� during the century since its founding. Once on campus, students are happy to report that Spelman鈥檚 鈥減rofessors are committed to the mission of the school,鈥� and they really 鈥渂ring out the best鈥� in their students. In the classroom, students are 鈥渆ncouraged to state our opinions,鈥� and professors 鈥渁llow room for us to challenge and discuss what they present.鈥� You鈥檒l definitely work hard in this 鈥渃hallenging academic environment,鈥� because professors 鈥渄o not allow for even a minute amount of slacking when it comes to completing assignments and being on time for class.鈥� Fortunately, there are 鈥渕any academic resources available to help us, such as tutoring services and a writing center.鈥� Plus, the majority of Spelman professors 鈥渢ake additional time outside of instructional time to assist their students鈥� with course work. Of particular note, Spelman is 鈥渧ery focused on the sciences and improving the number of African American women in this field, and they offer many facilities, faculty, and opportunities鈥� for advanced study. As graduation approaches, the 鈥淐areer Counseling Center is extremely strong and has helped numerous students find employment and graduate school placements.鈥� While the future looks bright for Spelman grads, many say this private institution could better serve its students by providing 鈥渕ore money for scholarships and financial aid.鈥�

Spelman College is 鈥渇ull of warm, welcoming, sisterly, and highly educated African American women.鈥� A unique environment, 鈥淪pelman College offers a chance for African American women to be the majority,鈥� and students appreciate being 鈥渟urrounded and empowered by other young, intelligent, and goal-oriented women like myself.鈥� At the same time, 鈥渢he institution promotes diversity within the student body,鈥� and Spelman women 鈥渃ome in all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life, though linked by our African descent. Anyone can find their place here.鈥� Confidence and individuality are prized at Spelman, and the typical undergraduate 鈥渟peaks her mind, wears what she wants, [and] is comfortable in her own skin, yet she has empathy and a strong sense of social justice.鈥� Many students 鈥渓ove to do service for the community鈥� and are involved in philanthropic projects around Atlanta. Spelman women are 鈥渉ardworking and focused on academics.鈥� However, most are 鈥渆xcellent at balancing a full course load and an active social life.鈥�

There鈥檚 a 鈥渟trong sense of tradition and loyalty鈥� on the Spelman campus, and most students are deeply involved in the community. From service groups to sororities, 鈥渢here are so many organizations and clubs that you鈥檙e bound to find one that fits you.鈥� There are tons of 鈥渙pportunities to obtain leadership positions鈥� outside the classroom, and many students are 鈥渧ery involved in campus life.鈥� A first-year student details, 鈥淚n my freshman year already, I鈥檝e walked in a fashion show, I was crowned Miss Glee Club, I write for the campus newspaper.鈥� There鈥檚 a constant buzz of activity on campus, and 鈥渋nformational forums, career fairs, college fairs, performances, and sporting events are at the forefront of everyone鈥檚 campus life.鈥� Socially, 鈥淕reek life is quite important at Spelman College, but isn鈥檛 a must.鈥� Even if you don鈥檛 join a sorority, 鈥渢here are a lot of social events on campus,鈥� and two other historically Black colleges, Clark Atlanta and Morehouse, 鈥渁re only inches away.鈥� Spelman undergrads say, 鈥淭he camaraderie between the schools is great,鈥� and 鈥渏oint homecoming with Morehouse is the highlight of the entire year.鈥� Off campus, students 鈥済o skating, bowling, and to Six Flags Over Georgia, as well as to Atlanta Falcons, Hawks, and Braves [games].鈥� Nearby, Atlantic Station is home to 鈥渁 major movie theater, shopping, [and] restaurants.鈥�
