SUNY Brockport is 鈥渁 school that specializes in producing nurses, PE teachers, and other teachers,鈥� but is still able to 鈥渁ccommodate students with a wide variety of interests.鈥� The school 鈥渉as a unique atmosphere in which students are able to come out of their comfort zone and blend with new people.鈥� 鈥淭he professors are diverse,鈥� says one student. 鈥淪ome are excellent teachers, others are simply extremely intelligent individuals. Most or all of them seem concerned students take something valuable away from their classes.鈥� Still, 鈥渆veryone has the occasional bad professor.鈥� Students like that 鈥渃lass sizes are small for the most part鈥� and the school offers 鈥渁 great study-abroad program.鈥� 鈥淭he administration that has recently come into place at Brockport is clearly trying to change the school for the better,鈥� notes one student. 鈥淚t has put academics first and has aggressively lobbied for, and raised, money to expand programs and encourage positive intellectual growth within the university.鈥� Students also appreciate that the president is so visible and involved with the student body. 鈥淵ou will see her around campus a lot, at basketball and football games, and basically anywhere.鈥� All in all, Brockport seems a 鈥済ood education for a good price!鈥�

While some think 鈥渢he typical student here is your white, upstate, and western New York jock,鈥� others see a bit more diversity. 鈥淭he student body varies from super athletic to super academic,鈥� notes one student. Still, most agree that the typical student here is 鈥渕iddle-class,鈥� 鈥淐hristian,鈥� 鈥渁nd pretty moderate politically.鈥� And there is no question there are 鈥渁 lot of physical education majors as well as nursing majors.鈥� One tool for categorizing these students might be the city/suburbs/rural divide. For example, 鈥渟ome people come from small towns and have that small-town something about them. Others come from Long Island, so they are opposite.鈥� While there are few atypical students, those who are 鈥渃an fit in with other people with whom they identify.鈥� A student explains, 鈥淚t can be difficult to find the right crowd for you at first, especially at a smaller school like Brockport, but once you find it, you鈥檙e golden.鈥�

Hometown Brockport, N.Y., is 鈥渁 relatively small town鈥� with an 鈥渋nviting鈥� community. 鈥淔or entertainment students hang out in the dorms like other colleges, but also peruse the shops, restaurants, and bars of Brockport鈥檚 quaint and thriving downtown. There is a regular bus schedule that makes rounds to the many malls, museums, cultural events, and landmarks of the Rochester, N.Y. area.鈥� 鈥淚n the village there is a movie theater鈥� that offers 鈥�$1 current midnight movies on Fridays,鈥� and also a bowling alley, where students enjoy 鈥�$1 bowling on Tuesdays and Thursdays.鈥� 鈥淪ports and fitness are very important here,鈥� and students are keen to both support and participate in them. 鈥淔or the weekends drinking is pretty popular here,鈥� says one student. As 鈥渢he school has become more academically focused during the last decade,鈥� 鈥渋nternships, studying abroad, and other academic experiences are becoming more popular.鈥� One on-campus perk several students cite is 鈥渢he food is rated number one in all of SUNY schools for the past few years.鈥�
