Stevens Institute of Technology is a private research university that stands out for its research opportunities and hands-on curriculum. One student describes how the school鈥檚 research focus 鈥済ave me the opportunity to publish papers and get 1-on-1 mentoring to expand my knowledge of certain topics.鈥� Another calls out the engineering school鈥檚 鈥淒esign Spine鈥�: a focus on collaborative design challenges and project-based learning that, for one student, involved 鈥渃reating air testers, robots, [and] speakers from the ground up using skills that I have been taught strictly at Stevens.鈥� For those interested, there鈥檚 also a co-op program that allows students to alternate between academic study and full-time, paid work experience. Classes at Stevens are 鈥渙ften very small,鈥� which is great for instructors 鈥渁ccomplished in their respective fields鈥� who 鈥渓ike to engage with every student in their class.鈥� One student finds it to be a Goldilocks school: 鈥渏ust the right size鈥攍arge enough to have lots of peers and not see the same people every day, but small enough to build close relationships with professors.鈥� Among Stevens鈥� other strengths are its 鈥減ostgraduate connections,鈥� which help students get jobs and internships, and an 鈥渆asy access to New York City [that] is hard to match.鈥� The 鈥渞eally rigorous鈥� coursework helps in that regard as it 鈥減repares you well鈥� for future careers, and the school鈥檚 reputation offers a good return on investment. As one student explains, 鈥淢any students graduate with a job offer since Stevens is very well known among tech companies in the area.鈥�

Students here are 鈥渃urious and welcoming鈥� individuals. The campus is 鈥渧ery work-centered,鈥� and fellow classmates are 鈥渧ery smart and focused on learning and getting a great job afterward.鈥� While everyone is 鈥渟uper determined to achieve their goals,鈥� it鈥檚 an environment that鈥檚 more collaborative than competitive. Students are 鈥渨illing to help others reach their goals as well.鈥� As one student describes it, while their peers tend to be quieter and more focused on school, there鈥檚 鈥渁 deep sense of camaraderie that emerges when we come together for shared academic interests or special events.鈥� Another student agrees, saying, 鈥淚鈥檝e never been to a place where I鈥檝e met so many genuinely nice and easy to talk to people.鈥� Stevens is a close-knit community, and students say the school鈥檚 smaller size means they鈥檙e able to 鈥渢ruly make change on campus.鈥� The size also means that 鈥測ou see the same people more often and feel less alone.鈥� Students here 鈥渁re often passionate about one particular thing,鈥� and 鈥渋t鈥檚 clear that every single student is inspired to strive as high as possible.鈥� As one student says, 鈥淚 find it refreshing to be able to meet so many ambitious people every day.鈥�

Stevens offers 鈥減lenty of opportunities to meet people and go to events,鈥� and as a result, many students are involved in extracurriculars, including academic clubs like the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, interest-based activities like rock climbing, chess club, and photography, and service organizations like Alpha Phi Omega. Greek life provides 鈥渁 lot of opportunity for fun,鈥� and 鈥渃ultural organizations are huge.鈥� Fall Fest and Winter Wonderland are campus-wide events offering seasonal activities like carnivals and barbecues in the fall and ice skating in the winter. Hoboken is 鈥渁 vibrant city...that is super safe and cozy but still has a lot going on,鈥� and students often use their free time to try 鈥渁ll of the different food spots鈥� and walk along the waterfront. In addition, New York City is a short trip away and the school鈥檚 entertainment committee helps make it more accessible by offering discounted tickets to see certain Broadway shows, concerts, and games. 鈥淭here鈥檚 something for everyone,鈥� whether you鈥檙e on campus or enjoying the city.

With several career fairs held through the year and more than 600 employers recruiting and otherwise involved on campus, The Stevens Career Center does an excellent job of facilitating connections between companies and organizations that want to hire their grads. As one student says, 鈥淵ou鈥檙e free to get as much help from the Career Center as you want.鈥� Clearly, plenty of students do鈥�97 percent of the class of 2021 were employed or continuing their education within six months of graduation. Additionally, the Career Center hosts workshops and seminars, arranges co-ops and internships, and sets up one-day job shadowing externships during the winter recess. All seniors at Stevens, regardless of their major, are required to complete a capstone Senior Design Project, which they are encouraged to develop with the collaboration of an industrial sponsor, providing another route for students to secure post-college employment. The five-year Cooperative Education Program is also popular among engineering students and provides additional access to employers. It also 鈥渞eally helps to be located so close to the city, as there are tons of opportunities available to you as a Stevens student.鈥� The Stevens Institute of Technology alums visiting PayScale.com report that the median starting salary is $87,800, and 50 percent report that they derive a high level of meaning from their jobs.
