01. Overview

What the school is known for:

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is committed to the education and growth of its students and encourages them to become 鈥渁 better person for having experienced the challenge of UAB.鈥 With a wide array of impressive programs, UAB is particularly noted for housing one of the largest schools of health professions in the country. Undergrads appreciate that the university offers 鈥渟mall class sizes in even the 100-level classes,鈥 which allows for a more personalized learning experience. They also note that the faculty are passionate 鈥渆xperts in their fields鈥 who 鈥渃are about teaching their subjects to the students.鈥 They describe professors as 鈥渁ccessible and exciting鈥 and 鈥渄own-to-earth enough to give students a real view of what it鈥檚 like to enter the world of academia.鈥 As one student elaborates, 鈥淔or many of the professors, it鈥檚 not just about a grade in a class that you are taking鈥t鈥檚 an experience and preparation for any of our further endeavors.鈥 Students specifically call out the professors in the science departments, who 鈥渄o a great job with interactive learning鈥 and 鈥渞eally put forth every effort to make sure that those who want help get it.鈥 Students may find the academic workload demanding, but most agree it is 鈥渃ertainly worth the challenge.鈥 They describe an environment where professors and administrators 鈥渃are about you鈥 and demonstrate a genuine commitment to student welfare. This is evidenced by initiatives like the biannual student forum, where departments share updates on efforts to improve student life and address student questions. As one student says, 鈥淭he faculty and administration are very close with students and actively look to pursuing perfection and improving the collegiate experience.鈥

08. Campus Life

What students say:

This 鈥渧ibrant and exciting鈥 campus feels 鈥渓ike a small town in a big city.鈥 Students are encouraged 鈥渢o get involved on campus in some shape or form.鈥 With about 380 student organizations available, there is 鈥渟omething for everyone to get involved in.鈥 As one student puts it, 鈥渢he problem [is] having to narrow down opportunities.鈥 The 鈥渨idely used Campus Recreation Center鈥 offers free workout classes, including 鈥渒ickboxing, krunk/ hip-hop class, yoga, [and] spin,鈥 as well as amenities like a wave pool and a rock wall. Additionally, students can participate in intramural sports such as 鈥渇lag football, dodgeball, soccer, volleyball, [and] slow pitch softball.鈥 When students have the time, some like to 鈥渄ine or shop at the many malls鈥 in Birmingham, which also has a wide variety of attractions, including 鈥渕any museums, art shows, concerts, dance clubs, [and] movie theaters to choose from.鈥 In addition to the activities on campus and the attractions of Birmingham, students love life at UAB because it鈥檚 鈥渓arge enough that [you] meet and see new faces daily, but small enough to where [you] have personal relationships with teachers and the administration.鈥
