The University of Arkansas鈥擣ayetteville 鈥渋s a large university with a community feel. It鈥檚 big enough to have a lot of great opportunities, but small enough you see people you know on campus.鈥� With Fayetteville鈥檚 outdoorsy culture, some students 鈥渨ould describe [the school] as a weird cross between Southern and hippie.鈥� Research opportunities abound, and prospective students are drawn to both the Honors College and the Sam Walton School of Business. Students also single out U of A鈥檚 鈥渟trong engineering program, with the depth and diversity in every discipline from mechanical to computer science [and] biomedical.鈥� Even with the relaxed atmosphere鈥攐ne student coins it as 鈥淔ayettechill鈥濃�� students say that there are 鈥渢ough programs that really make you work for your grade so you can be sure you are worth your degree.鈥� Professors are hit or miss; while some students say, 鈥淢ost of my professors are extremely helpful,鈥� others lament that while 鈥淚 enjoy most of my professors, but I do sometimes get the impression that they don鈥檛 care about my individual success.鈥� Students in the larger majors say they often lack individualized attention. As one student points out: 鈥淢y major is located in a smaller department, so I know my professors very well. However, in larger classes and departments it is easy to 鈥榞et lost鈥� or go unnoticed.鈥�

Students describe their peers as 鈥渇riendly鈥� and living 鈥渞elaxed lifestyles鈥� but are quick to point out that this doesn鈥檛 mean 鈥渢hey are not high-achieving students.鈥� In general, students say they鈥檙e an 鈥渁dventurous, fun loving, welcoming, genuine, [and] creative鈥� bunch. While some say the school is 鈥渧ery diverse for a Southern university,鈥� others lament the lack of diversity and say that the campus is 鈥渧ery much white, upper-middle class鈥� students from Arkansas and the surrounding states, noting that more could be done in 鈥渁dvocating for marginalized groups.鈥� But despite the lack of diversity, students say that their peers are 鈥渁ccepting鈥� and 鈥渒ind,鈥� and that 鈥渢he campus has a very warm feeling to it.鈥�

Football (this is Razorback country) and Greek activities are prevalent on campus, though some students say, 鈥淭he school is very centered around Greek life, so for some students it is harder for them to find their place outside of Greek life.鈥� The school鈥檚 location in the Ozark Mountains gives students ample opportunities for 鈥渉iking, kayaking, [and] rock climbing鈥� on the weekends. Popular destinations 鈥渘earby to take daytrips with your friends [include] Devil鈥檚 Den or Crystal Bridges.鈥� Students say, 鈥淭he pace of life is comfortably slow, but still full of fun opportunities,鈥� and Fayetteville 鈥渋s an incredibly vibrant city because it is a refreshing combination of elements of the old South and collegiate culture.鈥� One popular destination is Dickson Street, 鈥渉ome to a plethora of bars and restaurants.鈥� On campus, when the Razorbacks are playing, 鈥淭he whole state turns up to 鈥楥all the Hogs鈥� on to victory.鈥� For those who aren鈥檛 as interested in athletics, luckily, a 鈥渟chool this big has enough people of diverse interests to create a club or event almost incredibly tailored to you.鈥�

Among undergrads at the University of Arkansas鈥擣ayetteville, the Career Development Center is well-known for 鈥渟upporting and training students on their career path,鈥� with a particular eye toward the current job market. Students can benefit from invaluable services like headshot photo sessions free of charge and partake in one-on-one meetings to provide a mastery in salary negotiation. Additionally, 鈥淭hey provide online access to internships and jobs. The career center is also extremely helpful with helping students with things such as writing a resume and practicing for an interview.鈥� The university鈥檚 nationally recognized Career Track Razorbacks program provides a variety of resources designed to enhance students鈥� professionalism and equip them with the tools they need to conquer the job market. With all this support, it only makes sense that graduates see a median starting salary of $54,100 upon entering the workforce.
