University of California鈥擲anta Barbara is a great choice for students who are serious about their studies but also want a fun and fulfilling college experience. As one student notes, 鈥淯CSB is the perfect blend of academics and social life. I get to study at a renowned research university and work closely with professors while living on the beach and making lifelong friendships.鈥� Indeed, while the school鈥檚 鈥渋ncredible location鈥� and 鈥渟afe and beautiful campus鈥� are major attractions, so is the wide variety of academic programs offered鈥� everything from actuarial science to zoology, according to the university. UCSB is known for being 鈥渟trong in the sciences,鈥� especially its 鈥渉ighly ranked鈥� mechanical and chemical engineering programs. If you鈥檙e a self-directed learner, you may be interested in UCSB鈥檚 highly selective College of Creative Studies, which one student says 鈥渁llows me to pursue my academic interests with maximum freedom.鈥� While students appreciate the 鈥渓aid-back鈥� atmosphere at UCSB, they are quick to mention that the coursework can be 鈥渁cademically challenging.鈥� Fortunately, classes are taught by 鈥渙utstanding professors鈥� who, as one student declares, 鈥淚 would challenge any Ivy school to match.鈥� While 鈥渕any of [the] professors are Nobel Prize winners or well-known in their field,鈥� students say they are approachable and always available to help, rating 鈥渁ccessibility and knowledge of the professors鈥� as one of the university鈥檚 main strengths.

UCSB students are often described as 鈥渓aid-back but hard-working,鈥� with one student adding, 鈥淚鈥檝e met the smartest people of my life here.鈥� There is not just one type of student here. People are 鈥渆xtremely diverse, personality-wise鈥� and come from 鈥渁ll sorts of socioeconomic backgrounds.鈥� This variety helps everyone find their own group and 鈥渇eel at home here.鈥� As one student puts it, 鈥淓veryone finds their niche here.鈥� Overall, UCSB undergrads are 鈥渋ntelligent, sociable, [and] engaging,鈥� and 鈥渢here is a great sense of community among the students.鈥� At a school where students are 鈥渧ery motivated and driven to succeed academically,鈥� the vibe stays upbeat, with one student cheekily adding that 鈥渢he sunny weather keeps people happy.鈥�

At USCB, there鈥檚 a vibrant community with around 500 student organizations that make it easy for students to dive into enjoyable activities once they鈥檝e put down their books. One undergrad estimates that 鈥�85 percent of our student body is in at least one extracurricular activity.鈥� Another student notes, 鈥淲hether it be with sports, or in a community service or environmental club, rock climbing, politics, the list goes on. Students fit in by finding a good group of friends in the dorms and by getting involved in extracurricular activities.鈥� Beyond school activities, one student points out that 鈥淧eople think of UCSB exclusively as a party school, but it鈥檚 what you make of it.鈥� Another student adds, 鈥淎 lot of people party at UCSB鈥�But don鈥檛 be fooled. I鈥檝e met some of the smartest, most hard-working people [here].鈥� The 鈥渄own to earth鈥� atmosphere on campus sets UCBS apart from many other schools. As one student shares, 鈥淓very other college on my list seemed locked in an ivory tower. UCSB was the exception with both the warm, sun-kissed charm of a beach town and excellent academics.鈥�

According to PayScale.com, the median starting salary for a UCSB graduate is roughly $59,900 and popular careers include software engineer, mechanical engineer, and marketing manager. The most popular majors for UCSB students are Communication, Economics, and Sociology. While one Biochemistry major laments there are 鈥渂asically too many students, and not enough open positions,鈥� other students praise the range of internship and post-graduation career opportunities, with one describing UCSB as 鈥渁 springboard for the greatest young minds to launch into highly successful research and careers.鈥� The Career Services department at UCSB encourages students to take advantage of 鈥淕auchoLink,鈥� a frequently updated database of job and internship opportunities that also lists upcoming career-oriented events hosted by the school or by potential employers. Students are also able to store letters of recommendation with the Career Services department so as to streamline the process of applying for internships or jobs during their school tenure or after graduation.
