01. Overview

What the school is known for:

A 鈥渃ommitment to the liberal arts research institution model shapes the student experience鈥 at The University of Chicago, which values intellectual discourse, thorough inquiry, and free thought in its efforts to be 鈥渁 true place of learning and scholarship.鈥 The curriculum works on a 9-week quarter system, which provides an 鈥渆ase with which we can double major and take lots of electives.鈥 Since all undergraduate classes run through one institution, students say there is 鈥渁n amazing opportunity to gain exposure to different schools of thought and intellectual frameworks.鈥 Additionally, the curriculum is supplemented by 鈥渢ons of university-organized events, debates, conferences, competitions, etc. that supercharge learning,鈥 ranging 鈥渇rom hackathons to startup accelerator programs to book clubs.鈥 Academics are 鈥渃hallenging but fulfilling, and the school provides more than adequate resources to navigate,鈥 as well as a faculty that are 鈥渆xperts in their respective fields [and] have a ton of freedom in their course material and leading of discussions.鈥 Utilizing these assets, professors 鈥渃onsistently challenge students to think critically, question assumptions, and articulate ideas clearly, skills that extend far beyond any single discipline.鈥 Small 鈥渃lasses emphasize discussion and debate,鈥 and it is 鈥渃ommon for ideas from class to carry over into conversations well beyond the classroom.鈥 One student explains what sets the university apart: 鈥淭he dedication by the administration, students, and professors to academics [makes] it one of the best environments to study.鈥

06. Student Body

What students say:

With a long and storied history of open discourse and intellectual freedom, the university 鈥渁ttracts the type of person that wants to excel in all fields and gain knowledge.鈥 To wit, the campus is 鈥渇ull of students who are dedicated to their passions and love supporting their friends with their own passions.鈥 They are 鈥渋ntellectually rigorous, deeply curious, and sometimes even a little quirky,鈥 to the point of being 鈥渦napologetically invested in niche interests, and that shows up everywhere on campus.鈥 One student says, 鈥淧eople are open to lend a helping hand because knowledge is non-rivalrous, [and] your peers know that you being smarter will make the conversation just much more interesting.鈥 Another finds that 鈥渢he common thread around UChicago students is that they take a 鈥楰+1鈥 approach to everything鈥攁 second layer of thought.鈥 Students say that 鈥渆veryone is their own person, each with their own style,鈥 and 鈥渉as their own unique stories, passions, and motivations.鈥 Most here are 鈥渆xtremely intellectually curious about how the world works and thinks,鈥 and 鈥渆veryone is undeniably very smart.鈥 These qualities lead some to call the University of Chicago a 鈥渂astion for intellectual curiosity.鈥

08. Campus Life

What students say:

At this academically demanding school, life 鈥渋nvolves a lot of studying, doing homework, and going to classes, [and] discussion sections鈥 before free time begins. 鈥淩esearch opportunities are a big extracurricular activity,鈥 and 鈥渇un often looks like late-night study sessions that turn into long conversations.鈥 Even within the 鈥渧ibrant student organization scene,鈥 it鈥檚 said that 鈥渕any of the clubs on campus offer invaluable career training and mentorship.鈥 That said, it鈥檚 not all academic: 鈥渟ports and intramurals are big here,鈥 and 鈥減eople play soccer on the quad, read in hammocks, and play other games鈥 as well. 鈥淎s the evening approaches, social life does as well,鈥 and 鈥渁 lot of people hang out in each other鈥檚 dorms or apartments and even in the fraternity houses.鈥 Dorms are divided under the House System, each of which has its own culture and traditions and hosts fun activities like 鈥渇ood tours, musicals, and board game nights.鈥 Chicago itself 鈥渉as endless activities to offer,鈥 and 鈥減eople go downtown to clubs, restaurants, museums, and beaches in the spring.鈥 As one student sums up, 鈥淟ife is stressful, but rewarding.鈥
