There are many reasons to attend the University of Dayton, but the one mentioned above all is its experiential learning. 鈥淲e have opportunities for real world experience in every major鈥� (and sometimes even further independent expertises by department), like 鈥渢he Sophomore Experience Entrepreneurship Program that gives students a $5,000 grant to run their own microbusiness.鈥� Engineers have space, time, and resources to build rigs and run experiments, 鈥渢he music program is phenomenal,鈥� and minicourses in subjects like microeconomics utilize the Dayton area to show 鈥渢he interaction between economics and the environment through outdoor excursions that were often very informative.鈥� All of this is backstopped by the professors, to whom students give high marks. 鈥淢ost of my professors have been extremely nice, approachable, and engaging.鈥� They 鈥渃hallenge you but also really want you to succeed, especially if you participate in discussions and provide quality work on assignments and exams.鈥� Indeed, 鈥渢hey want to show each student that they have potential to be great, but they have to unlock it.鈥�

Undergrads at the University of Dayton overwhelmingly agree that their peers are 鈥渧ery sweet,鈥� and 鈥渟uper welcoming and approachable鈥� people who foster a strong sense of community and school spirit. Given the 鈥渞elatively small class sizes, it鈥檚 easy to get to know a lot of people in your major鈥� and others more simply describe it as common to see 鈥渟trangers quickly become friends and friends become like family.鈥� As for finding a balance between school work and social lives: 鈥渨e aren鈥檛 just book worms, and we are not just party animals. We are both.鈥� The student body remains 鈥減redominantly white,鈥� though 鈥渢here are [now] more POC and LGBTQ+ students than there have ever been before.鈥� Moreover, students feel strongly about inclusion, noting that 鈥渟tudents never need to be told to work together to create a safe and inclusive campus, they just do.鈥�

At the University of Dayton, learning and excitement extend far beyond the classroom: 鈥渢here are activities going on everywhere, on-campus jobs to partake in, as well as a variety of organizations and clubs.鈥� As one undergrad elaborates, 鈥淚鈥檝e been in Bella Voce (the women鈥檚 choral ensembles), Opera Workshop (a musical theater class)...and Javanese Gamelan ensemble (a percussion tradition from Indonesia).鈥� Additionally, 鈥渋ntramural sports are very active on campus...[along with] professional organizations that align with your major, ethnicity, or gender.鈥� Of course, there鈥檚 plenty of casual fun to be had as well; students mention sledding in winter, hanging out at Kennedy Union and 鈥淸playing] pool or [going] bowling at the Hangar.鈥� And eating is a serious activity at Dayton, given that 鈥渢he food is awesome.鈥� Some students describe 鈥渁 lot of partying鈥� on the weekends, but also suggest that 鈥減eople do not pressure you into drinking if you don鈥檛 want to.鈥�

On average, the starting salary of the typical University of Dayton graduate is $58,700 per year, with 47 percent of alums reporting that their work has 鈥渉igh meaning鈥� to them. Students credit this to UD鈥檚 mission to integrate class time with real working experience. As one student puts it, among the 鈥済reatest strengths as a university are our internship opportunities.鈥� For budding engineers and scientists, the University of Dayton Research Institute offers a chance to partner with companies to conduct research and aid in innovation. Not only that, the university offers inroads to a variety of other co-op and professional development opportunities, and its Career Services center offers interview coaching, resume development sessions, and career fairs. It鈥檚 no wonder that 93 percent of graduates are either employed, accepted into graduate schools, or working in meaningful volunteer programs within six months of graduation for the Class of 2020.
