This flagship school of the University of Hawai鈥檌 system offers more than 100 bachelor鈥檚 programs to the 14,000 or so students who call the O鈥檃hu campus home during the school year. Nearly 250 degree programs across 15 schools are available to students, but no matter the course of study, Hawai鈥檌 plays TA. 鈥淲hen someone goes to UH Manoa, they aren鈥檛 expecting to receive an education grounded in a Native Hawaiian place of learning but that is exactly what they get. Whether they are learning the Hawaiian language, Hawaiian culture, or about the Hawaiian ecosystem, there is a lot for everyone that goes along with their major,鈥� says a student. 鈥淯H really incorporates how important Hawai鈥檌 really is.鈥� Sciences are particularly strong here, and the language offerings are incredibly diverse (think Ilocano and Samoan). Teachers are 鈥渁lways willing to go the extra mile to help students by offering office hours鈥� and many professors challenge students while simultaneously 鈥渓etting us know what content will be useful in our future careers and/or graduatelevel exams.鈥� However, the real gold here is in the added resources for extra help in classes. There is 鈥渇ree one-on-one tutoring鈥� and review sessions through the learning center, a writing center, a learning emporium for certain subjects, and 鈥淸you] can even walk into the library where librarians will help to find sources for papers and guide students in a great direction.鈥�

This group鈥攎ainly from the Asia-Pacific region and mainland USA, with the occasional European or South American throw in鈥攊s a 鈥渉uge melting pot鈥� that is just 鈥渇illed with Aloha.鈥� An 鈥渋ncredible amount of culture is exhibited here,鈥� most of all the Hawaiian cool: 鈥淚 have never been on another college campus where it is completely normal to ride your skateboard barefoot or walk around with your surfboard.鈥� This is good news for the plenty of exchange students from Asia are here 鈥渢rying to have an American campus experience鈥�; ROTC also has a 鈥渧ery large鈥� presence. On the whole, this is a 鈥渧ery relaxed and cool鈥� bunch of students with whom 鈥測ou can strike up friendly conversations with strangers in the cafeteria, or while waiting to cross the street, or while ordering food.鈥�

UH Manoa is on an island that offers a bit of everything. Here you can find 鈥渢he city, the country, the surf, the mountains, the malls, and so on and so on. Oahu has something to fit my every mood and need,鈥� says a student. There are always cultural festivals and activities, and Hawai鈥檌 is made for active people who 鈥渓ike to get lost in nature鈥檚 beauty.鈥� Whether you鈥檙e 鈥渞unning up Koko Head, swimming with dolphins on the west side, catching some rays between classes on the Waikiki strip, or jumping off rocks on the north shore, there鈥檚 no way to escape the beauty that is Hawai鈥檌.鈥� On the weekend, many local students travel home so the campus can get very quiet, but students do use their IDs for free bus transportation to explore the relatively small island and student services and student affairs are 鈥渆xcellent.鈥� As is common with college students, 鈥渕any of us do not have enough money to enjoy the nightlife; therefore we enjoy our free time at the beach.鈥� Still, students 鈥渉ave work that we can鈥檛 just blow off for a swim or something.鈥� People like to use the grill that the school has set up, and there are 鈥渁lways people walking from place to place until late at night, hanging out with friends in the courtyards, skateboarding, or cooking out.鈥�
