As a large public research school, The University of Houston is able to offer more than 100 undergraduate degree programs. Whether you鈥檙e in- or out-of-state, students consider their school to be 鈥渘ot very expensive for the quality of education you鈥檙e getting,鈥� and the constant improvements help 鈥測ou feel like your degree is appreciating in value over time along with the school itself.鈥� Students confirm that 鈥渢he research and other academic opportunities... are very accessible to students who seek it out.鈥� This includes taking advantage of UH鈥檚 vast alumni network (more than 325,000 and counting), not to mention its location in the corporate center of Houston, where 鈥渢he opportunities that are provided are immense.鈥� Faculty have 鈥渁ll taken a keen interest in student success and are very available outside the classroom.鈥� They are said to 鈥渄o a good job of bringing the material to life and explaining it well,鈥� which students also attribute to the variety of classes, from the discussion-based to those with innovative methods and projects. There are also 鈥渃ase competitions...sponsored by real local communities, and there is a chance to win money prizes if we advance to first place.鈥� This built-in real-world experience is buoyed by 鈥渢he dedication and expertise of the career advisors at this institution, [who] have significantly contributed to students鈥� success in navigating their professional paths.鈥� A student says that 鈥淥verall, the academic experience at the University of Houston is marked by quality instruction and a strong focus on preparing students for success beyond the classroom.鈥�

Students are 鈥渧ery accepting鈥� and match 鈥渢he diversity one sees across the city of Houston鈥� and are 鈥渁mbitious people who are aiming to get their dream job after [completing] college.鈥� They appreciate that the school 鈥渆nables you to work and get an education, without having to sacrifice one for the other,鈥� and this eye towards the future means 鈥渢he vibe is less party-focused, with students caring about getting through and moving into career opportunities.鈥� That said, whether coming from the 鈥渓arge number of commuter students鈥� or not, those wishing to partake in the social aspects of UH find themselves in 鈥渁 tight-knit community with many events and social spaces to commune and get to know each other.鈥� As one student says of their peers, 鈥淚 know I can rely on them,鈥� and indeed, suggests that you can rely on finding 鈥減eople with forward-thinking ideas and a passion for learning.鈥�

A majority of the student body are commuters, and one notes that 鈥渂etween classes, we love to visit the coffee spots on campus and work/talk.鈥� While some do think the school 鈥渃ould be more commuter friendly,鈥� they describe 鈥渓ots of clubs and activities...and places and events to meet new people and make new friends.鈥� With 37,000 undergraduates, there are 鈥渟o many people and possibilities for experiences and connections鈥�: you can 鈥渃heer on the [Division I] Coogs!鈥� or visit 鈥渕arkets, booths and other activities that happen a couple times a month.鈥� Students also mention an active student body with 鈥渆vents that are accessible to anyone who wishes to join,鈥� and 鈥渁 lot of clubs to join that are relevant to your major.鈥� University of Houston鈥檚 overall vibe might be best summed up by its walkability: 鈥淭he campus is beautiful and the nature is amazing, it makes the walks to class so peaceful.鈥� There鈥檚 always something to see and do, and it鈥檚 鈥渁ll very well designed and enjoyable to be in.鈥�

The University Career Services office runs Cougar Pathway, which is a career resources hub for all students as well as alumni and employers that offers appointment scheduling, a r茅sum茅 database, on-campus recruiting, and a job database. The office also organizes career fairs, provides career counselors, and sets up skills and informational workshops for all majors. 鈥淢aking appointments with advisors is not very difficult, there are always r茅sum茅 workshops taking place, there are workshops that assist with test anxiety, and it really seems my future is cared for and cultivated here,鈥� says one student. The university鈥檚 location is 鈥渧ery close to so many different fields, including oil and gas, healthcare (Texas Medical Center) and many large corporations, [which] allows for high job placement.鈥� Adds another student, 鈥淐ompanies are always coming to campus for internship opportunities. UH encourages students to take part in outreach projects, internships, industry partnerships, and alumni leadership, and 鈥渂eing in the middle of one of the largest and busiest cities in the country, the job opportunities are endless.鈥�
