As one student explains, 鈥淵ou have your 鈥榟ere for a good time鈥� types, absolutely rock-star scholars, and dedicated students who balance their GPA and their social calendar.鈥� Some students note that 鈥渢here is definitely a big Greek life presence鈥� on campus, and one student adds, 鈥淭he Greek community does intermingle frequently with non-Greeks. I鈥檓 not Greek, but I see it a lot and have a lot of Greek friends.鈥� When it comes to making friends and fitting in, students agree that getting involved on campus is key. Lawrence, Kansas, is often referred to as 鈥渢he perfect college town.鈥� This lively campus has plenty of activities to keep students engaged. With over 500 student organizations to explore鈥攅verything from Greek life to chess clubs and intramural sports鈥攖here鈥檚 something for everyone. In addition, KU鈥檚 鈥淪tudent Union Activities brings in comedians, authors, and movies on a regular basis,鈥� so there is 鈥渘ever a dull night鈥� on campus. Sports are a big deal here, especially during the winter, when 鈥淜U basketball is our religion, and Allen Fieldhouse is our church.鈥� As one devoted Jayhawk explains, 鈥淚 schedule everything in my life around the KU men鈥檚 basketball schedule, as does much of the student population.鈥� But don鈥檛 worry if sports aren鈥檛 your thing; there are countless other ways to get involved and make the most of your time here. In addition to joining clubs or participating in sports, 鈥渢he typical student probably volunteers in the community, has a part-time job, [and] has some special hobby (from rock climbing to tightrope walking).鈥� Many students are also 鈥渧ery outdoorsy鈥� and make the most of the nearby hills and lakes. When the weather is nice, 鈥測ou can rent camping equipment from the rec for a weekend out at the lake鈥� or 鈥済o rock climbing.鈥� Students also appreciate Lawrence鈥檚 鈥済reat live music scene, cool coffee shops, and eclectic stores,鈥� as well as the popular bars and nightclubs.
