The University of Louisville is a large research university that is part of the Kentucky state university system. The school provides 鈥済reat STEM research鈥� opportunities, and popular programs include the School of Medicine and the Speed School of Engineering. The academic experience is 鈥渧ery good鈥� and many students also appreciate the classes that use a flipped classroom model, where more of class time is devoted to discussion or hands-on activities rather than lecture. Such learning experiences include field trips and opportunities to engage with the local community. One engineering student recounts working on a water filtration system that the class presented to the city鈥檚 water utility, saying, 鈥淭o be able to do something like that as [first years] was pretty cool.鈥� Professors at UofL are 鈥減assionate about the subject matter, knowledgeable, and care about their students鈥� and overall, most students report positive experiences. As one student emphasizes, 鈥淓very professor I鈥檝e had has been personable and understanding.鈥� The school鈥檚 internship and research opportunities are also lauded, especially by engineering students who mention paid Co-op work with a variety of employers including NASA, GE, and Ford. For many enrollees, this 鈥渄edication to making students enter the workforce with applicable skills outside a degree鈥� makes UofL stand out.

The overall atmosphere at University of Louisville is 鈥渟upportive鈥� and 鈥渇eels like a family once you鈥檙e there.鈥� As one student elaborates, 鈥淭he community of this school is so embracing and kind.鈥� UofL is 鈥渁 very diverse institution with students truly from every walk of life.鈥� The student body is 鈥渧ery inclusive鈥� and 鈥渢here is a large queer population.鈥� Students advocate for each other and are 鈥渜uick to take action towards a better campus community.鈥� Undergraduates describe their peers as 鈥渁cademically driven,鈥� and 鈥渟ome of the smartest people I know.鈥� Many students also work while in school, balancing their classes with participating in programs such as the partnership between UPS and UofL, which pays tuition for students working the overnight shift at UPS. Many students agree the best thing about UofL is 鈥渢he student body and how easy it is to find friends and a sense of belonging.鈥� As one student sums up, 鈥淚f you ever need help with anything, there鈥檚 always someone there to help you.鈥�

Students report spending a lot of their free time studying in the library or other academic buildings, but when students get a break from studying, they describe University of Louisville as a 鈥渂eautiful campus鈥� where, in warm weather, people flock to the 鈥渓awns to play sports games and/or have picnics.鈥� The school鈥檚 activities also cater to a wide range of interests, with a special nod during the fall football season where 鈥渢ailgates are the biggest events to go to.鈥� Intramural sports are also popular among many students, as well as working out in the recreation center. For those with a green thumb, UofL has a Garden Commons where volunteers help grow 鈥渇ree-to-pick, fresh, organic produce.鈥� One excited student explains, 鈥淚 love gardening, so it鈥檚 awesome we have this resource on campus.鈥� There are also 鈥渕any creative events such as art galleries and poetry readings鈥� happening on-campus, as well as clubs including the LGBT+ club, the commuter student club, the pre-pharmacy club, and the horseback riding club. As one student elaborates, 鈥淭here are organizations ranging from helping people with their mental health to pickling different types of vegetables to research organizations for the STEM fields.鈥� Students note that Greek life is 鈥減retty prominent but does not overrun the school鈥�; it鈥檚 possible to not participate and 鈥渟till have a social life.鈥� For venturing off-campus, 鈥淧eople like to go to bars or find local restaurants to visit since there are so many,鈥� explains one student. Just as 鈥渓ots of people gravitate towards Louisville鈥檚 music scene,鈥� so too is there a scene for everyone at UofL.
