Pioneering research and 鈥渞eadily available internships鈥� are just a few of the offerings at the University of Massachusetts鈥擜mherst, where students have access to 鈥渕any different degrees and routes to further education.鈥� There are 鈥渓ots of resources for just about anything,鈥� including 鈥渁ccess to networking opportunities and professional events.鈥� As a member of the Five College Consortium, the university allows students to take courses at nearby institutions, and one student notes that this 鈥渋s really cool when looking for a specific class.鈥� Many local students appreciate the affordability, with one commenting that 鈥渋t is not too expensive for in-state tuition, and it offers a huge variety of classes.鈥� The courses themselves offer a range of formats, including those that feature 鈥渙pen conversations during class,鈥� fostering an environment where students can 鈥渃ome together, see different ideas, and create a better environment.鈥� Other courses incorporate 鈥渇ield trips, engaging lectures, group activities,鈥� or 鈥減eer-led team learning where one person who took the class leads a discussion of current students working through a problem set.鈥� One student in an electrical engineering course (designed for non-engineers) describes its innovative approach: 鈥淚nstead of traditional lectures, we learn by doing through building and programming a functional robot over the semester.鈥� No matter the format, professors are widely regarded as 鈥渦nique individuals鈥� who 鈥渞eally bring classes to life with their own teaching styles,鈥� with one undergrad sharing, 鈥淚 love my professors and they make me eager to learn.鈥�

The student body at UMass is made up of 鈥渁 true variety鈥� of 鈥渇un, energetic, [and] motivated鈥� individuals who are typically 鈥渙pen and expressive about their orientations鈥� and place an 鈥渆mphasis on diversity and belonging.鈥� As one of the largest schools in the state, it attracts 鈥渁 lot of people from different areas and backgrounds into one place, which is really interesting and exciting.鈥� One student shares, 鈥淚 feel like we get a little bit of everyone here, and that鈥檚 what makes it unique. There鈥檚 someone for everyone.鈥� Students note that UMass has 鈥渁 strong campus culture that makes it so that you can easily connect with most people,鈥� so it鈥檚 鈥渞eally easy to make friends.鈥� One student adds, 鈥淎nyone can find a great community here with a lot of support.鈥� While 鈥渕ost are from Massachusetts,鈥� the different backgrounds and experiences create a 鈥渨elcoming and enthusiastic mixing pot of communities representing [different] cultures鈥�identities, and interests.鈥� Most here are 鈥渁cademically motivated鈥� but 鈥渁lso like to have fun on the weekends,鈥� and the overall student dynamic 鈥渋s very social.鈥� One student notes that one of the best things about UMass is that it鈥檚 鈥渧ery diverse and gives me a very well-rounded social experience.鈥�

Amherst offers a wealth of activities, and 鈥渢here are many options available to you on campus, [so] it鈥檚 easy to get your schedule filled.鈥� A booked calendar suits many students, who 鈥渂alance classes with club meetings, campus events, and time spent at the Rec Center or hanging out in the dining halls.鈥� Meals are events unto themselves since the 鈥渇ood here is really awesome,鈥� and 鈥渇our dining halls help reduce the crowd size at each one.鈥� The student-run University Programming Council organizes popular events such as game nights, movie nights, and 鈥淯Mass comedy nights,鈥� while hockey games draw large crowds. Students appreciate the scenic 1,450-acre campus and find that 鈥渟unset yoga and walking around the pond and seeing the ducks is very relaxing.鈥� The climbing gym and Outing Club are common ways for students to get active, while over 400 student clubs鈥攔anging from the Robotics Club and Fiber Arts Club to the Investment Club鈥攈elp forge both personal and professional connections. As one student says, 鈥淭his school has done a really good job making this place a community.鈥�

The university鈥檚 Career Development and Professional Connections Hub provides career centers at different schools across the campus in one central location, which allows for more specialized advising, workshops, recruiting, and career fairs. Internships and co-ops are available throughout the year, and the hub maintains a database of available opportunities that is updated daily. 鈥淢any opportunities are presented to students for discovering a major, practicing interview skills, [and] writing their r茅sum茅s,鈥� and there are 鈥減lenty of resources on campus to help you access internships and research for out-of-class learning experiences.鈥� The school also offers several scholarships to support students who wish to complete unpaid internships or research.
