The University of Michigan鈥擜nn Arbor is home to 19 schools and colleges, offers 250 degree programs, and 鈥減rovides every kind of opportunity at all times to all people.鈥� Academically, Michigan 鈥渋s very competitive, and the professors have high academic standards for all the students.鈥� The university has 鈥渁n amazing honors program,鈥� some students say that 鈥淢ichigan is as good as Ivy League schools in many disciplines.鈥� They particularly cite the 鈥済reat engineering program鈥� and report that the business program provides 鈥渁ccess to some of the brightest leaders鈥� in the business world. If you鈥檙e considering medical school, Michigan has a 鈥済ood undergraduate program for medical school preparation鈥� that includes summer research opportunities. In addition, students appreciate that the school offers 鈥渁 wide range of travel-abroad opportunities鈥� in over 100 countries, numerous research opportunities, and excellent academics 鈥渁t a low cost.鈥� The university also provides its students with 鈥渁 vast amount of resources. Internships, career opportunities, tutoring, community service projects, a plethora of student organizations, and a wealth of other resources鈥� are all available, but 鈥測ou need to make the first move鈥� because no one 鈥渨ill seek you out,鈥� explains one proactive student. Overall, students find Michigan to be 鈥渁 great environment, both academically and socially.鈥� As one student says, 鈥淚t has the social, fun atmosphere of any Big Ten university, but most people are still incredibly focused on their studies. It鈥檚 great to be at a place where there is always something to do, but your friends completely understand when you have to stay in and get work done.鈥�

At Michigan, there鈥檚 a place for everyone, with 鈥渉undreds of mini-communities within the campus, made [up] of everything from service fraternities to political organizations to dance groups.鈥� The student body is described as 鈥渉ugely diverse,鈥� and is 鈥渙ne of the things Michigan prides itself on.鈥� As one student notes, 鈥淚f you participate in extracurricular activities and make an effort to get to know other students in class and elsewhere, you鈥檒l definitely end up with a pretty diverse group of friends.鈥� Most students are considered 鈥渟ocial but very academically driven.鈥� They are also recognized for being 鈥渙n the cutting edge of both research and progressive thinking.鈥� Between the school鈥檚 size and overall engaged student body, you can be sure that 鈥渋f you have an interest, you can find a group of people who enjoy the same thing.鈥�

On this bustling campus, there are over 1,600 student organizations to get involved in. As one student says, 鈥淚f you seek it out, you can find organizations for any interest. There are always people out there who share your interests. That鈥檚 part of the benefit of [so many]鈥� students!鈥� Students say there is an active party scene, and 鈥渕ost students go to house parties [or] hit the bars鈥� on weekends. However, there are plenty of opportunities to socialize outside the party scene. For example, on Friday nights, students can attend UMix, a free late-night campus tradition that features crafts, inflatables, games, and food. There are also 鈥減henomenal cultural opportunities in Ann Arbor, especially music and movies.鈥� The university also proudly supports 29 NCAA Division 1 teams. 鈥淭he hugely popular football Saturdays鈥� bring everyone together to cheer on the Michigan Wolverines, and students say the 鈥渟chool spirit here is impressive.鈥� Overall, Michigan is a social campus filled with students who take academics seriously, and students appreciate this sense of balance. As one student puts it, 鈥淵ou can have a stimulating conversation with someone one day, and, the next day, be watching a silly movie or playing video games with this person.鈥�

The Career Center offers a wealth of resources to students learning to be advocates for themselves post-graduation. The massive fall Career Fair jumpstarts the process for job-seekers (the Career Center even offers a smartphone App for navigating the floor plan), and the semester schedule is packed with programs and workshops like Career Crawls, which focus on themes such as choosing a major, or Immersions, a program which hosts half-day visits to an organization鈥檚 workplace. Career Center Connector lists tons of job and internship opportunities while Alumni Profiles provide glimpses into grad鈥檚 career choices and job search strategies. Other structured programs, like the Public Service Intern Program, link students with internship openings in the U.S. and abroad. Graduates who visited PayScale.com report a median starting salary of $65,900, and 49 percent believe that their jobs make the world a better place.
