The University of Minnesota鈥擳win Cities is 鈥渁 top-ranked university in a beautiful city that has a lot of great job opportunities,鈥� making it a place where 鈥渁nyone can find what they want to do.鈥� This 鈥淏ig Ten research university鈥� offers over 150 undergraduate majors to 鈥渉elp students discover themselves鈥� and their interests. As one student explains, 鈥淥ur school pushes us to expand our horizons, to go outside of our comfort zones, and to try things that we never would have considered trying before.鈥� Many students are attracted to UMN for its 鈥済reat research opportunities鈥� and excellent academic programs, including the 鈥減henomenal engineering programs,鈥� which include an earthquake simulation center, a nanotechnology lab, and a fluid mechanics lab on an island in the Mississippi River. Regarding classes, students report that most professors are 鈥渁pproachable and are more than willing to take time out of their day to ensure you understand the material.鈥� Overall, students say their professors are 鈥渧ery knowledgeable鈥� and 鈥渟trive to make [the subject matter] exciting.鈥� Students appreciate that the university fosters 鈥渁 small school feeling鈥� in 鈥渁n urban setting,鈥� and describe it as 鈥渁 place with endless opportunity for those willing to discover their passions.鈥�

Most students find UMN to be a friendly and supportive environment. They describe their peers as 鈥済enerally quite friendly and outgoing,鈥� and everyone is 鈥減retty willing to go out of their way for others, we are Minnesota nice, after all.鈥� While the school has a large Midwestern population, with 鈥渕ost likely hailing from Minnesota, Wisconsin, or the Dakotas,鈥� it attracts a broad mix of people and personalities. making it impossible to put everyone 鈥渋nto one category.鈥� As one student says, 鈥淲e have so much diversity here, that it is hard to pinpoint a general student type鈥� or slot everyone 鈥渋nto one category,鈥� and because of this, 鈥渆veryone can find their niche and be free to express who they are.鈥� One topic that brings the campus together is the weather, and undergraduates can 鈥渇it in by bonding over how much [they] hate winter.鈥� Overall, this ambitious student body is filled with people who 鈥渁re driven to succeed and to make the most of the vast opportunities offered by the UMN.鈥�

Life at UMN is busy and 鈥渇ull of variety.鈥� Students fill their free time with a range of activities, including participating in intramural sports, attending sporting events, or joining any of the more than 1,000 student organizations on campus. For students in search of less active activities, UMN also 鈥渉osts a lot of lectures and discussions with prominent figures.鈥� In addition, 鈥渢he Coffman Student Union always has something going on鈥攎ovies, book signings鈥攁nd there are a ton of student groups to join, no experience necessary.鈥� The school is also a member of the Big Ten conference of Division I teams, and 鈥渟porting events are widely popular, even if we aren鈥檛 doing very well.鈥� The Greek life scene on campus is 鈥渢hriving,鈥� and over 3,000 students participate. For those interested in a social scene with 鈥渁lcohol and lots of dancing,鈥� there are often 鈥渉ouse parties鈥� on the weekends. Exploring the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul is a favorite pastime because there is 鈥渁 lot going on!鈥� Both the campus and surrounding cities are bike-friendly, and getting around is easy with the free university shuttle and public transportation options like buses and the light rail. Many students enjoy spending time outdoors, and popular activities include everything from 鈥渂iking [and] outdoor games [to] reading in the park [and] going to the farmers market.鈥� Life at UMN is 鈥渇ull of variety鈥� and undergraduates 鈥渃an get involved in almost anything.鈥� In short, 鈥淚f you鈥檙e bored on a weekend, then you鈥檙e not looking hard enough.鈥�

U of M Career Services is somewhat unique in that each college has its own career center catering to the specific needs of its students. While these centers are linked through a main Career Services office, the majority of the services available at U of M, such as advising, career fairs, and job search tools, are offered through the individual colleges. As such, 鈥渁cademic advising and career services differ from college to college,鈥� but most students seem to be pleased with the quality of what is offered. One student reports that 鈥渕y advisor and the career center are excellent guides,鈥� and another states that, 鈥淚鈥檓 always getting emails [from] the career center, all on-campus jobs offer training for finding jobs after graduation, and the information on post grad options are extremely easy to find.鈥� There are also resources available specifically for women, LGBT students, international students, and other demographic groups. According to the school, U of M alumni have founded over 19,000 companies. Out of graduates visiting PayScale.com, 54 percent report feeling as though they derive a high level of meaning from their careers.
