Interdisciplinary study is the highlight of an education from the University of New Haven, where students take courses from across the five colleges and schools and engage in project-based learning to build out a practical, personalized degree. The lauded criminal justice program, for instance, has 鈥渁 lot of opportunities...and different pathways offered for those going into law,鈥� and 鈥渁cademics, especially the legal studies department, are out of this world.鈥� Because at least one component of experiential education is required for graduation, the school works to ensure that students get internships or service learning, whether that鈥檚 in a booming field like cybersecurity or international business, or an up-and-coming degree in Fire Science or Esports and Gaming. 鈥淢ost students choose this school due to their specific major,鈥� notes one student, and another points out that New Haven 鈥渉as a lot of amazing programs you cannot attend anywhere else.鈥� Several students point to the renowned Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science, 鈥渁 great strength in this school.鈥� Faculty 鈥渉ave r茅sum茅s that are incredibly proficient, in some cases to the point where they are overqualified to teach,鈥� and bring this experience to the classroom via case studies, examples, and 鈥渞eal world stories as well as hands-on events and exercises.鈥� Also, because 鈥渃lass sizes tend to stay small [we can form] better relationships with our professors.鈥� Those seeking further support outside class will find 鈥渇lexible office hours for professors,鈥� a 鈥渨riting center [that] helps with papers,鈥� and Centers for Academic Success and Advising. Overall, 鈥渢he learning style here feels very hands-on,鈥� with burn rooms and a crime scene house that students can investigate and 鈥渦nique equipment, materials, and procedures.鈥� As one student puts it, 鈥淚鈥檝e taken a number of labs and field trips in my classes that have really prepared me to use equipment and methods I鈥檒l need in my field.鈥�

At New Haven you鈥檒l find 鈥渁 large number of like-minded people who are motivated by the course work and offered programs.鈥� There are 鈥減eople of different race, religion, and all other kinds of backgrounds鈥� here, and 鈥渋t is easy to find people you fit in with because the campus is so diverse.鈥� Students and faculty 鈥渁re very protective over making sure everyone gets along and doesn鈥檛 feel out of place,鈥� and people here are 鈥渧ery welcoming, always open to helping one another and supportive of people who want to learn more鈥� regardless of their major, as well as 鈥渃aring and considerate.鈥� Students say that 鈥渆ven though it鈥檚 a small campus, there are still tons of people to meet,鈥� and 鈥測ou don鈥檛 have to run into or see anyone you don鈥檛 want to see, unless they live on your floor.鈥�

Slightly more than half of the students live on campus, enjoying the 鈥渨onderful facilities for a school of our size鈥� and because first-years can choose their Enhanced Learning Community by interest, things like 鈥渨atching movies in the lounges and playing poker, dominoes, or cards are always fun every night.鈥� The weekdays, however, are 鈥渦sually packed with school time鈥� and activities with the 150 clubs and organizations (like Greek life), many of which support the different majors, like the Forensic Science club, or which set about 鈥渢aking part in public service opportunities.鈥� As for the weekends, athletics are a big part of this Division II school, and both intramurals and intercollegiate games 鈥渁lways can bring out a good crowd,鈥� while New Haven itself features plenty of 鈥渃ool places and restaurants鈥� to explore.
