Citing 鈥渁cademic prestige鈥� and 鈥渁ffordability,鈥� the 鈥渂eautiful,鈥� 鈥渉istoric鈥� setting, and 鈥渨orld-renowned鈥� faculty, students take pride in 鈥渂eing a Tar Heel鈥� at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The professors at UNC-Chapel Hill are 鈥渢op-notch, many of them being academic celebrities,鈥� but 鈥渓ike the students, are never flashy鈥� and remain 鈥渉umble.鈥� Students find that their professors frequently stress that they are here to 鈥渓earn from you all as much as you are here to learn from me.鈥� UNC offers undergrads 鈥渂ountiful resources鈥� as 鈥渙ne of the top public research universities in the nation,鈥� and students have the opportunity to participate in this research by applying for 鈥済enerous academic grants.鈥� Academics are 鈥渞igorous,鈥� but the 鈥渜uality of teaching makes the material intellectually stimulating.鈥� The college is fairly large, so students will likely attend 鈥渓arge lecture-hall style classes,鈥� yet students stress that as they advance, 鈥渃lass sizes are smaller,鈥� and this leads to 鈥渢he opportunity to build more personal relationships with professors.鈥� UNC鈥檚 鈥渞eputation and ranking in STEM programs,鈥� along with its well-regarded business school, are among its greatest strengths. Said one transfer student, 鈥淚 visited countless top universities,鈥� but UNC was the only one that had a 鈥減opulation...both economically and ethnically diverse.鈥�

The student body is 鈥渁s helpful as it is inquisitive, and as creative as it is caring.鈥� Students are always 鈥渉appy to direct you to your classes.鈥� Everyone at Carolina is 鈥渇un, energetic, and passionate about something.鈥� The students 鈥渁re smart, but they aren鈥檛 haughty and ostentatious about it.鈥� Students are 鈥済enerally liberal, but there is a vocal religious/conservative presence on campus as well.鈥� Ultimately, UNC is 鈥渦nified unlike any other school I have encountered,鈥� says one student, 鈥渨hether it鈥檚 in the common support of a sports team, music group, or simply the pride in saying you are a Tar Heel.鈥� Another student agrees, 鈥淒onning Carolina blue almost constantly, we all just really love our school!鈥�

UNC offers its 鈥渕ore than 20,000 undergrads鈥� a host of opportunities to socialize, relax, and pack themselves all together at the Dean E. Smith Center to cheer on the men鈥檚 basketball team. Carolina has strong athletics, including opportunities for 鈥減otential student athletes.鈥� For non-athletes, it鈥檚 a great school to be a fan, 鈥渁s basketball games especially create a special campus atmosphere that nothing can recreate.鈥� Despite the university鈥檚 size, life on campus generally moves at a 鈥渟low pace鈥濃�攊n a good way. The campus is full of 鈥済orgeous old buildings, towering oak trees, and ubiquitous birds, squirrels, and chipmunks,鈥� and students 鈥渓ove walking through the upper quad,鈥� a 鈥渂eautiful green area with lots of old trees.鈥� Raleigh is 鈥渙nly 30 minutes away鈥� and 鈥淒urham only 15,鈥� so students will head out there on weekends, and if they need to unwind during the week, they go 鈥渙ut to bars on Franklin Street.鈥� There鈥檚 鈥渁lways a party going on at UNC,鈥� but there are also 鈥減lenty of ways to have fun if you鈥檙e not into the party scene.鈥� There are several 鈥渄ay hikes somewhat close to campus,鈥� and Carrboro is 鈥渨ithin walking distance,鈥� providing a 鈥渉ip space for social life including a farmers market, concert venue[s], and many bars and restaurants.鈥�

University Career Services (UCS) offers a slew of resources to students looking for advising, internships, and jobs, as well as workshops on jobseeking skills. Plus, 鈥渢here are so many professors at this school that will go the extra mile to ensure you are comfortable and have a plan to maximize your potential.鈥� The campus鈥� location in the Research Triangle 鈥渃reates a wealth of opportunities for finding internships, jobs, shadowing, and or extracurricular activities,鈥� and since UNC is the nation鈥檚 eleventh largest research university, there is 鈥渁 colossal amount of ongoing research projects at the university,鈥� which students can often become involved in. And they鈥檙e big believers in doing so: 鈥淭he research is what has made me a better thinker and a better person,鈥� says one student.
