The University of San Diego is a private Catholic institution that prides itself on its status as a 鈥淐hangemaker,鈥� which represents its dedication to creating sustainable solutions locally and afar. In fact, 50 percent of students find great opportunities through the school鈥檚 vast study abroad network, which includes programs and internships in 44 countries. 鈥淯SD encourages its students to apply what they learn in the world to make positive, impactful, sustainable change,鈥� says one. Strong curricula and academic advising help students construct four-year plans and create enjoyable schedules, and 鈥減rojects, seminars, field trips, study abroad programs, and team-taught courses are some of the ways the university gets students engaged.鈥� Professors 鈥渁re eager to share鈥� their passion for their subject with students and offer 鈥減ersonalized one-on-one learning through office hours.鈥� They 鈥渃ommunicate directly with the students on what material they find to be important.鈥� Most 鈥渁dapt to the new research that has come out on how students learn best鈥� and 鈥渂ring in speakers to show how [students] can implement Changemaking into...future classrooms.鈥� That also extends into 鈥渕any informative meetings about research opportunities and internships.鈥� Speaking of which, the 鈥淐areer Center [is] very helpful with landing students jobs.鈥�

This is 鈥渢ruly...a campus of Changemakers鈥� and 鈥減eople passionate about causes [where] everyone is hard working yet still socially engaged.鈥� USD 鈥渄oes a great job of making sure that students feel like they have a home,鈥� and the school has worked to make common areas where students feel comfortable and seen. Because of the 鈥渟unny, more relaxed environment鈥� students enjoy on this California campus, they lean 鈥渢oward casual鈥� in their attire鈥斺�渂alanced and stylish,鈥� as one student describes. Many here come from a 鈥渟trong religious background and greatly utilize the ministry services on campus,鈥� and everyone is 鈥渨elcoming and enjoyable to be around.鈥�

The 鈥渨eather is so perfect and the campus so beautiful [that] most students spend time outside鈥� at USD, which is 鈥渢en minutes away from both the beach and city.鈥� Here it鈥檚 easy for students to take their pick of a litany of activities鈥攖hey can 鈥渓ay out on the lawn, take in the sun, skateboard, surf, [or] go out in the town or beach.鈥� 鈥淪an Diego [is] such a large city that there is so much to do and see,鈥� and weekends tend to be devoted to exploring; however, there are plenty of social activities and clubs to join on campus. The 鈥淭orero Program Board makes sure there is always something for the students to do.鈥� One student comments on the 鈥渧ery accepting Greek life system,鈥� citing their motto: 鈥淭hese hands don鈥檛 haze.鈥� Of all first-year students, 95 percent live on campus, and all first years (and transfers) participate in a Living Learning Community, which 鈥減uts people from the same general living area in a class together focused on a general theme鈥� such as innovation or advocacy. USD is a place where students 鈥渃an thrive because [their] physical and mental wellness is cared for alongside [their] education.鈥�

USD鈥檚 Career Development Center is 鈥渧ery helpful with landing students jobs,鈥� providing 鈥済uidance for internship[s] and job opportun[ities]鈥� and supporting undergrads through the application process. The center strives to be a resource for undergrads as they explore the paths available to them, connecting them with professionals in their desired fields. 鈥淭here are many opportunities for students to network and seek out a position in their career of interest,鈥� such as the way in which USD has brought together industry partners and faculty with the Torero Career Guide, a resource that provides students with sample resumes for different roles. And the job exploration goes way beyond on-campus coaching 鈥斅爐he Torero Treks program provides undergrads with the opportunity to visit top companies around the country, learning how they operate and networking via alumni panels and on-site tours. With a median starting salary of $60,200, USD alums are clearly taking advantage of all that the Career Development Center has to offer.
