The University of South Carolina鈥擟olumbia is a historic public research university built on 200 years of proud tradition and academic excellence. Those who enroll say the 鈥渟chool is always improving鈥� right along with the students who are 鈥渓earning and striving to be the best person you can be (academically and otherwise).鈥� To that end, the university offers 鈥渟tudents the resources they need to succeed through workshops鈥�service opportunities, student organizations and various academic endeavors鈥� and provides a strong support system for its 鈥渃hallenging courses鈥� in 鈥渕ultiple success coaches, countless tutors, and advisors and professors who will get to know you outside of the basic classroom.鈥� That means that instructors 鈥渃are about [your] success inside and outside of the classroom,鈥� and make a corresponding effort 鈥渢o relate their in-class lectures to the real world.鈥� They鈥檙e 鈥渁lso willing to give advice about鈥�research, job, and internship opportunities,鈥� which can help students develop into 鈥渧ery employable prospect[s] upon graduation.鈥� Just be ready to 鈥減articipate in class,鈥� as faculty are said to 鈥渇oster an environment of respect and thoughtful discourse.鈥� Ultimately, U of SC 鈥渋s about opportunity鈥濃�攁nd making the most of it 鈥渞eally depends on what YOU are all about.鈥�

This historic Southern institution of U of SC is all 鈥渁bout everyone coming together and being one giant Gamecock family, whether in academics, sports, or anything else.鈥� Students suggest that 鈥渕any different types of people鈥� are drawn here and tend to be 鈥渋ncredibly friendly and filled with Southern charm.鈥� The 鈥渓arge Greek population鈥� also results in 鈥渁 lot of the student body [being] relatively laid back in dress and attitude,鈥� and one student notes that 鈥淚鈥檝e never felt judged鈥�and I feel a sense of camaraderie amongst my peers.鈥� Essentially, U of SC is a big school that 鈥渄oes an amazing job of making sure you don鈥檛 get lost in the crowd.鈥�

鈥淚t is quite normal for students to be involved in a variety of activities鈥� at U of SC, ranging from 鈥渁wesome鈥� tailgates to Greek life and intramural sports. 鈥淔ootball games are the biggest social event of the fall鈥� and constitute an important Gamecock tradition; 鈥渢raffic patterns are altered because it is such a huge deal.鈥� Student spirit thrives in longstanding events like Tiger Burn and Homecoming, both fixtures of the academic year. More frequently, 鈥渢here is almost always an event happening on Greene Street,鈥� like Hip Hop Wednesday or a farmers鈥� market. 鈥淭he weather makes it really easy to do things outside鈥� and students are often found 鈥渟cattered around sitting and playing on the Horseshoe鈥� or participating in the many 鈥渙utdoor recreation activities run through the university.鈥� The school鈥檚 location gives the variety of 鈥渟horter distances to the beach as well as the mountains,鈥� and the 鈥渧ery artsy鈥� city is easily navigable on foot. That鈥檚 especially great on weekends, and older students can be found frequenting the 鈥渕ultitude of bars鈥� in the Five Points neighborhood of downtown Columbia. Those who remain on campus say 鈥渢here is an organization for everything,鈥� so undergraduates can explore options from 鈥渟kydiving to Latin dance to language.鈥� Also, community service is 鈥渧ery common here鈥� and on 鈥淪ervice Saturdays, hundreds of students are assigned to a community service site in the Columbia area.鈥� Finally, students also benefit from 鈥減henomenal鈥� amenities, from 鈥渇ree athletic tickets to twelve free counseling sessions a year.鈥�
