Students love the 鈥渕any options as far as majors go鈥� at The University of South Dakota, spotlighting the nursing school as well as labeling business, biology, premed, law, and psychology courses as 鈥渧ery solid.鈥� There鈥檚 a lot of praise for the school鈥檚 Honors Program, which offers smaller class sizes and discussion-based courses to qualifying students, and students call it the 鈥渂est-kept secret in the country.鈥� Factor in the numerous winners of 鈥渂ig scholarships like the Goldwater and Truman鈥� and it鈥檚 clear why some students feel the school offers 鈥渁 reasonable price鈥濃�攅specially for out-of-state students. So far as faculty go, there seem to be winners in every department, with 鈥渟ome of the best鈥� music professors, according to one respondent, and more generally, staff who are 鈥渘early always willing to go the extra mile for students.鈥�

Students at USD tend to be active and involved: it seems like 鈥渆very person on campus is part of at least one鈥� student organization, which is 鈥渁 great way to meet new people and [to participate in] activities.鈥� Many enrollees appear to fit the bill of a 鈥渃onservative Midwesterner,鈥� and the school is 80% Caucasian, but their interests vary. Some describe the campus as a place where 鈥減artying is a definite part of the culture,鈥� whereas others note that 鈥渕any people join a Greek system or are athletes or musicians鈥� and that those outside those roles 鈥渟eem to focus on their academics.鈥� The big takeaway is that regardless of background or interests, you鈥檙e likely to fit right in, thanks to 鈥渢he open mindedness of most students.鈥�

The University of South Dakota has over 200 student organizations and offers everything from Greek life and club sports to drag shows, Zumba classes, and Bible study. Students feel that 鈥渟ince it is a smaller campus, [there are] more opportunities to be involved in internships and various other activities,鈥� though others suggest that they 鈥渉ave to make their own fun, which often involves partying or taking small road trips to other cities in the area.鈥� For that group, which describes a 鈥渓ot of partying,鈥� Yankton, Sioux City, and Sioux Falls are 鈥渁ll within an hour鈥� and 鈥渙ffer everything a person would want to do.鈥� Students also suggest that while only 34% of undergraduates remain on campus (84% of first-years do so), the nearby town of Vermillion is close enough that 鈥渘o one is more than a 10-minute walk/bike ride away!鈥� Regardless of where they live, the sense is that they 鈥渒eep themselves occupied with schoolwork, intramural sports, and hanging out with their friends.鈥�
