At the flagship University of Tennessee鈥擪noxville, students can test the variables of their education and explore the unknowns. Local affiliations, as with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are just one example of the 鈥渆xtensive opportunities for undergraduate research鈥� that let students鈥攅specially those in engineering and life sciences鈥攁ctively experiment with 鈥渞eally cool resources鈥� and this availability is UTK鈥檚 鈥渂iggest hidden treasure.鈥� Students also appreciate how UTK helps them zero in on their interests; though it鈥檚 a moderately large school, 鈥渋t is easy to make it a small school by focusing on a certain field鈥� in which they can get all the attention they crave. These strong academics owe a lot to the 鈥渙utstanding, passionate, intelligent鈥� professors, who are 鈥渃ompelling and excited to teach,鈥� though a few students note this depends on your department and recommend the school鈥檚 honors program. The UTK student body is a diverse group of people waiting to be friends with you. Self-described as outgoing and 鈥渞emarkably kind,鈥� students seek out 鈥渟timulating conversations鈥� with peers whose backgrounds contrast in culture, birthplace, sexual orientation and religious beliefs. While a number of students find pride in being a 鈥減rogressive鈥� University鈥攁sserting that 鈥淯TK is one of the most liberal schools in the South鈥濃�攁 few find things 鈥渧ery Southern, Christian, and conservative.鈥� Still, the spirit of UTK is strong; Vols take seriously their commitment to improving their community鈥攙olunteering for local organizations like Habitat for Humanity鈥攁nd working actively to understand and support their classmates: 鈥淚 feel it is vital to learn the perspectives of my peers,鈥� and to 鈥渁lways [be] willing to lend a helping hand.鈥� Above all, students describe the importance of safe spaces in queer, cultural, and religious organizations: 鈥淲e look out for each other.鈥� With over 30,000 undergraduates, students can find the company that 鈥渄oes their best to make you feel like you belong.鈥�

UTK students contend that their 鈥渟chool spirit is unmatched.鈥� Decked in orange, they cheer with pride for their football team on game day: 鈥淭he energy the stadiums and teams bring to campus is unparalleled,鈥� and the prestigious Pride of the Southland Marching Band dazzles fans at half-time. Even those that are 鈥渘ot a huge fan of sports鈥� find, 鈥淵ou can truly feel the energy not just in the stadiums but also just walking through campus on a normal day.鈥� Participation is high in clubs and intramural sports, and there are 鈥渃onstantly free events for students that exceed expectations,鈥� like shows and guest lectures. The campus is 鈥渜uite walkable,鈥� so there鈥檚 no reason not to partake in the various activities, whether that鈥檚 hanging on the lawns, heading to the Student Union, or utilizing the rock climbing, tennis, and yoga of the athletic facilities. Those willing to go a bit further can sign up for the Outdoor Pursuits program or venture across the Tennessee river to hike the many trails at Urban Wilderness. Despite being a dry campus, students do note that there is a 鈥淜noxville party scene鈥� and Greek life, as well as a contingent of those who like 鈥渆xploring downtown or having a nice night in.鈥�
