University of Vermont (UVM)

Black Pinpoint University of Vermont Admissions | Burlington, VT | 05401-3596

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

The University of Vermont is a public research university offering more than 100 majors and a "wide variety of courses that are all highly regarded," as well as numerous research opportunities, even for first-years. In addition, "the school does a wonderful job of supporting their students" in a variety of ways, including mental health and wellbeing, with "a wellness center and counseling available to everyone." Faculty members "really ensure a positive and curious environment" and they "make it a point to learn students' names and get to know them." The professors are "all highly qualified and are leaders of their field" and they "have flexibility with how they design curriculums," which means they "tend to teach in a style and format they enjoy" and are more willing to "meet outside of class and ensure you're on the correct path for success." The faculty are genuinely invested in their subjects "and make their lectures engaging and interesting," often employing unique pedagogical techniques. For example, one course "featured independent equity research and a school-sponsored trip to NYC to present a stock pitch to professionals." Another student adds, "One day, my English professor gave us a walking tour of campus to explain postmodernism through the architecture of [the] campus." Put simply: "I love my program!"

06. Student Body

What students say:

Among this "stylish... [and] academically driven" crowd, many "are focused on social activism, specifically environmental" and are "very passionate about politics, human rights, and social justice and equality." The students "project a creative and welcoming energy...wanting to learn and absorb all life has to offer." People tend to be "on the left side politically," but the "student community is a very inclusive and diverse group." Generally, "students tend to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, as well as music," and they are sometimes characterized as "outdoorsy." The school "is large enough to support a diverse community, but not overwhelmingly large," and Catamounts are "very strong in their pride and spirit of representing their school." A student assures that "while Vermont can feel small, there is truly so much to do, and UVM does a great job of cultivating meeting spaces and allowing you to find your people."

08. Campus Life

What students say:

The student body is "a tight-knit community" where "you can always find another student doing similar interests." Community building is encouraged with "frequent postings on social media of students looking to meet up with people who want to go backcountry skiing, create an intramural sports team, or who need a ride to an East Coast city during school break." Students enjoy spending time in the great outdoors: whether that's snowboarding in the winter or, "during warmer weather, campus is jovial and students are all over playing Spikeball and other games outside." The campus "is beautiful and very active, [and] there is always something to keep you from being bored." Although classes take up a good chunk of time, students say, "a way to break up the week is [by] working out, doing intramurals [and] clubs," and on the weekends, going downtown to check out the "great bar scene." Downtown Burlington "is a hotspot for food and shopping," and many students simply "enjoy [being with] each other, spending time in residential areas or going out downtown." One student shares, "Between resident hall communities, professors who care about each and every one of their students, and the many clubs on campus, students are constantly forming connections with others."

14. Career Services & Jobs

What students say:

Graduates of the University of Vermont (UVM) attribute their successes in the workforce to a unique brand of learning and experiences that “prepares us for career leadership later in life.” The Career Center guides students through internships, job shadowing, and “many opportunities for high quality undergraduate research.” Students identify how to advance in their field with yearly career quizzes and connect with future employers via Handshake and UVM Connect. The prevalence of interprofessional education, practical classes, and service-learning—particularly for medical students at the on-campus hospital—“means you are getting hands-on experience while still in school and learning to…create professional connections while you’re at it.” Additionally, students find that UVM’s intimate size puts them at “a huge advantage [for] internships and jobs across the state. Employers in tech fields, politics, and much more look for UVM interns and graduates to fill roles for them.” One student also asserts the perks of their alma mater’s cachet: “It has a fair amount of value just in name.” According to students surveyed on PayScale.com, 54 percent report they find meaning in their work, and have a starting median salary of $63,700.
