The University of Vermont is a public research university offering more than 100 majors and a 鈥渨ide variety of courses that are all highly regarded,鈥� as well as numerous research opportunities, even for first-years. In addition, 鈥渢he school does a wonderful job of supporting their students鈥� in a variety of ways, including mental health and wellbeing, with 鈥渁 wellness center and counseling available to everyone.鈥� Faculty members 鈥渞eally ensure a positive and curious environment鈥� and they 鈥渕ake it a point to learn students鈥� names and get to know them.鈥� The professors are 鈥渁ll highly qualified and are leaders of their field鈥� and they 鈥渉ave flexibility with how they design curriculums,鈥� which means they 鈥渢end to teach in a style and format they enjoy鈥� and are more willing to 鈥渕eet outside of class and ensure you鈥檙e on the correct path for success.鈥� The faculty are genuinely invested in their subjects 鈥渁nd make their lectures engaging and interesting,鈥� often employing unique pedagogical techniques. For example, one course 鈥渇eatured independent equity research and a school-sponsored trip to NYC to present a stock pitch to professionals.鈥� Another student adds, 鈥淥ne day, my English professor gave us a walking tour of campus to explain postmodernism through the architecture of [the] campus.鈥� Put simply: 鈥淚 love my program!鈥�

Among this 鈥渟tylish鈥� [and] academically driven鈥� crowd, many 鈥渁re focused on social activism, specifically environmental鈥� and are 鈥渧ery passionate about politics, human rights, and social justice and equality.鈥� The students 鈥減roject a creative and welcoming energy鈥�wanting to learn and absorb all life has to offer.鈥� People tend to be 鈥渙n the left side politically,鈥� but the 鈥渟tudent community is a very inclusive and diverse group.鈥� Generally, 鈥渟tudents tend to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, as well as music,鈥� and they are sometimes characterized as 鈥渙utdoorsy.鈥� The school 鈥渋s large enough to support a diverse community, but not overwhelmingly large,鈥� and Catamounts are 鈥渧ery strong in their pride and spirit of representing their school.鈥� A student assures that 鈥渨hile Vermont can feel small, there is truly so much to do, and UVM does a great job of cultivating meeting spaces and allowing you to find your people.鈥�

The student body is 鈥渁 tight-knit community鈥� where 鈥測ou can always find another student doing similar interests.鈥� Community building is encouraged with 鈥渇requent postings on social media of students looking to meet up with people who want to go backcountry skiing, create an intramural sports team, or who need a ride to an East Coast city during school break.鈥� Students enjoy spending time in the great outdoors: whether that鈥檚 snowboarding in the winter or, 鈥渄uring warmer weather, campus is jovial and students are all over playing Spikeball and other games outside.鈥� The campus 鈥渋s beautiful and very active, [and] there is always something to keep you from being bored.鈥� Although classes take up a good chunk of time, students say, 鈥渁 way to break up the week is [by] working out, doing intramurals [and] clubs,鈥� and on the weekends, going downtown to check out the 鈥済reat bar scene.鈥� Downtown Burlington 鈥渋s a hotspot for food and shopping,鈥� and many students simply 鈥渆njoy [being with] each other, spending time in residential areas or going out downtown.鈥� One student shares, 鈥淏etween resident hall communities, professors who care about each and every one of their students, and the many clubs on campus, students are constantly forming connections with others.鈥�

Graduates of the University of Vermont (UVM) attribute their successes in the workforce to a unique brand of learning and experiences that 鈥減repares us for career leadership later in life.鈥� The Career Center guides students through internships, job shadowing, and 鈥渕any opportunities for high quality undergraduate research.鈥� Students identify how to advance in their field with yearly career quizzes and connect with future employers via Handshake and UVM Connect. The prevalence of interprofessional education, practical classes, and service-learning鈥攑articularly for medical students at the on-campus hospital鈥斺�渕eans you are getting hands-on experience while still in school and learning to鈥�create professional connections while you鈥檙e at it.鈥� Additionally, students find that UVM鈥檚 intimate size puts them at 鈥渁 huge advantage [for] internships and jobs across the state. Employers in tech fields, politics, and much more look for UVM interns and graduates to fill roles for them.鈥� One student also asserts the perks of their alma mater鈥檚 cachet: 鈥淚t has a fair amount of value just in name.鈥� According to students surveyed on PayScale.com, 54 percent report they find meaning in their work, and have a starting median salary of $63,700.
