Wesleyan University is committed to helping students discover their passions with an interdisciplinary, open curriculum that 鈥渁llows students to explore their actual interests rather than being tied down by tedious general education requirements.鈥� Students 鈥渢ruly love that there are no required courses outside of our chosen majors/minors/concentrations. It really emphasizes that Wesleyan is a place to discover what we love.鈥� It also yields professors who 鈥渢each fascinating classes to medium and small groups of excited, passionate students鈥� and facilitate 鈥渧ibrant discussions on the course material.鈥� Professors are known for being 鈥渆xtremely creative and detailed with their course focuses, which makes for some amazing classes,鈥� like 鈥渃ivics classes that force you to dialogue with strangers in an effort to create connections and practice good conversation.鈥� Students also value the 鈥渕any research opportunities and multiple ongoing research organizations headed by professors that include undergraduates.鈥� There are plenty of resources for students: 鈥淭A sessions, office hours, therapy, tutoring, are all readily available if you have a problem at school.鈥� One student concurs, saying, 鈥淲hen I have needed help navigating institutional challenges like declaring majors, transferring credits, and meeting language requirements for studying abroad, [my professors] have been enormously helpful.鈥� In all, Wesleyan is said to be 鈥淚nspiring students to expand their interests and cultivating a culture of support not competition.鈥�

While 鈥渆veryone is super smart and leans artsy,鈥�you can also find all kinds of people鈥� with a variety of personalities and interests. As one student happily notes, 鈥淗onestly, no two people are the same in expression.鈥� Many students 鈥渁re strongly committed to social justice鈥� and 鈥渆ngaged in the community and in broader social issues,鈥� while others 鈥渉ave niche interests in subjects that would be nearly impossible to study at universities not offering an open curriculum.鈥� A student says of the school鈥檚 interdisciplinary environment: 鈥淭his is a great place for people who love art and sports and science and mixing all of those things together.鈥� Students frequently 鈥渄ouble major and often they major in two pretty unrelated fields.鈥� Wesleyan students 鈥渁re constantly looking to better themselves,鈥� and no matter the subject, 鈥減eople commit to their interests.鈥� Students are described as 鈥渟ocial, passionate, and highly engaged,鈥� Wesleyan is a place where 鈥測ou can absolutely find your people no matter who you are or what you are into.鈥�

Students are required to live on campus for all four years, and as a result, 鈥減eople rarely go off campus on weekends because there鈥檚 so much going on.鈥� Weekly events include everything 鈥渇rom group workout classes to painting workshops鈥� and The Wes Film Series, 鈥渁 wonderful group that plays four movies every week for free at Wesleyan鈥檚 theater.鈥� Wesleyan offers over 250 clubs and groups that cater to a diverse range of interests, such as the Prometheus Fire Arts Club and the crafting club Threads and Thingamabobs. There is also 鈥渁 鈥渂ig [arts] scene on campus (visual arts, studio arts, performing arts, theater, music, dance),鈥� along with 鈥渁 large a cappella presence.鈥� Overall, 鈥渟tudents are very involved in the school鈥攈aving on-campus jobs, being a part of a club, running a social justice campaign, etc.鈥� In addition, 鈥渁 lot of people are involved in intramural sports,鈥� such as soccer, rugby, and Ultimate Frisbee which 鈥渉as an active community.鈥� Students say the 鈥渇ood is good, meals are very social, and our dining halls are always bustling.鈥� One of the benefits of 鈥渂eing at a small school means knowing everyone and running into them all the time鈥� around campus.

The Gordon Career Center has 鈥渕any helpful resources for applying to summer internships and jobs after graduation,鈥� and works individually with students to design career paths based on the overlap of interests, rather than straight trajectories from a major. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the school, students have multiple and wildly varying interests (for instance, a double major in physics and theatre), and 鈥渘o one can be placed in a traditional box.鈥� Students are truly free to make their own schedules and pursue the career they desire here, all with the support of the faculty. 鈥淣ot once have I been discouraged from pursuing my interests, and the encouragement to follow these passions has caused a spark in me to bring them together,鈥� says a theater and science in society double major.
