Recognized for its 鈥渃hallenging classes鈥� and 鈥渁cademic resources,鈥� Xavier University of Louisiana is a Catholic and historically Black university that stresses a well-rounded curriculum within a nurturing learning environment. Students here can 鈥渂e whoever they want to be,鈥� which is why the school鈥檚 support extends beyond programs in STEM and health sciences to a required 40-hour credit core curriculum that focuses on Catholic tradition and contemporary learning. For many students, attending this 鈥渆xtremely academically focused鈥� university pays off. Several undergrads cite that the university is 鈥渒nown for having successful graduates go on to complete medical and graduate school.鈥� But don鈥檛 let Xavier鈥檚 strenuous curriculum intimidate you. Many students agree, 鈥淸Our] school鈥檚 greatest strength is our sense of togetherness. We all want to see each other succeed and are willing to help each other along the way,鈥� professors included. Most students describe their professors as 鈥渒ind, understanding and always willing to work with you to achieve a goal.鈥� Faculty at the university 鈥渧alue [their students鈥橾 education,鈥� as observed by students who find that their instructors go above and beyond conventional teaching methods and try to incorporate pedagogical innovation into classes: 鈥淚nstead of a final exam, my professor is making us do a podcast project in the style of a Vanderbilt professor.鈥� Additionally, as a school that challenges its students to be their best, 鈥渢here is always a resource center or a teacher offering their services鈥� to offer additional guidance. Overall, students agree that Xavier 鈥渢ruly prepares students for experiences after they graduate.鈥�

Though Xavier University of Louisiana is a historically Black university, the student body is very diverse, with notably 鈥渨ell-rounded鈥� and 鈥渃ommunity-minded鈥� individuals. Several students note that 鈥渆ven though this is a small campus, the people can be so different.鈥� Since Xavierites come from so many different backgrounds and regions, 鈥渢hey bring unique elements such as regional dances, phrases, mannerisms, and recipes.鈥� Though some might worry about feeling isolated, Xavier is 鈥渙ne big family鈥� where 鈥渘o one feels unreachable or untouchable.鈥� Additionally, it鈥檚 clear that Xavier students recognize how hard their classmates work and make the effort to lift one another up. As one student puts it best, 鈥淣o one will allow you to fail,鈥� but they will 鈥淸give] you challenges to push yourself forward.鈥�

It鈥檚 a life of books at this rigorously academic university, so 鈥渓iterally most of us are in the library most of the day if not in class,鈥� though you will find that 鈥渟tudents congregate in their dorm rooms or in the lobby area of the cafeteria.鈥� A life of books, at least, until the weekend, at which point the bustle of the nearby city calls out: 鈥淭here鈥檚 always something to do in New Orleans.鈥� As far as clubs and organizations go, there is 鈥渟omething for everyone, and you even have the opportunity to start clubs of your own.鈥� Many enrollees enjoy the Peer Dean Association, which has select members 鈥減rovide a family space for incoming students鈥� and help them acclimate to life on campus.鈥� Student ambassadors 鈥渁re seen as the faces of Xavier鈥� and offer tours and host events for prospective undergrads. Additionally, basketball games are wildly popular, and there are some events thrown on campus, such as 鈥渓ive music [on] Fridays,鈥� which 鈥渋ncludes free food, dancing, and fun.鈥�
