The Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois University of Technology 鈥渄oes an excellent job of providing students with a strong understanding of the law in the core areas,鈥� including torts, criminal law, contracts, civil procedure, and constitutional law. The school emphasizes 鈥減ractical experience that allows for actual exposure to various areas of law,鈥� including opportunities for externships and legal clinics. Chicago-Kent is also known in the law profession for its 鈥渙utstanding鈥� Legal Writing program,鈥� which 鈥渢eaches you everything from how to write an office memorandum to a persuasive appellate brief and a contract.鈥� Students appreciate the variety of 鈥渃ourses on different and interesting topics.鈥� As one student puts it, 鈥淚 did not have time to take every class that sounded interesting, which is a good problem!鈥� Professors here are 鈥渧ery focused on teaching鈥� and 鈥渁lways offer help to anyone who needs it.鈥� There are quite a few practicing lawyers and judges among the faculty, which many students appreciate for their 鈥渁bundance of stories,鈥� experience, and expertise. 鈥淚 love that many professors are practitioners鈥n their field, such as judges, a former ICK prosecutor, or a lawyer with the IRS (as some examples),鈥� shares one student. Overall, students say the environment is supportive, and 鈥渂oth students and faculty are down-to-earth, helpful, and collaborative.鈥� The program鈥檚 academic rigor and professional network helps set students up for success after graduation. As one student says, the 鈥渃ourses were challenging, and I feel well prepared academically for the post-grad legal world.鈥� Chicago-Kent is 鈥渟trongly connected to the Chicago job market including big firms, regional medium-sized ones, and the public sector,鈥� and students say 鈥渢he accessibility of alumni to help with professional opportunities鈥� is among the school鈥檚 greatest strengths.

The school鈥檚 West Loop location is a big plus for many students. Chicago鈥檚 West Loop is an area downtown that鈥檚 鈥渞ight by many of the courthouses and largest law firms鈥� and has plenty of 鈥済reat food options.鈥� In addition, the location is 鈥渞eally great for transportation,鈥� as its close to two major commuter rail stations. Overall, the 鈥渇acilities are great鈥� and the law school鈥檚 building features 鈥渓ots of good classrooms and study spaces.鈥� Students also appreciate the library, saying the school鈥檚 鈥渞esources for researching are quite extensive and easy to use. If you run into issues with your research, the library staff is helpful.鈥� When it comes to activities, Chicago-Kent鈥檚 Moot Court Honor Society and Trial Advocacy Program both give students the opportunity to compete nationally. There are also 鈥渓ots of social opportunities鈥� provided by the school; however, some part-time students say it can be hard to attend many events, as they 鈥済enerally happen during the 9am-5pm workday.鈥� The general consensus is that most students are 鈥渇riendly and cooperative.鈥� As one student notes, 鈥淲hile there is a mild amount of competitiveness, there is a large sense of community, especially within the 1L sections. We all help each other to achieve and push each other to accomplish our goals.鈥�
